View Full Version : Tidal 'HD' resolutions?

I think this has probably been discussed elsewhere on this forum, but I haven't been able to locate the answer.

Whereas Qobuz streams 16bit/44.1kHz 'CD-quality' as FLAC, Tidal states that it streams FLAC at 1411kbps.

So, does Tidal (I haven't tried it yet) stream higher resolution material, at higher resolution, e.g. stuff recorded at 24/48, or 24/96, or...? Or is theirs also 'CD quality'?

I'm guessing 24/48 at best, considering 1411kbps 'limit'? (although I don't know how much 'advantage' FLAC compression gives).

TIA

1411 is 32*44.1 or 16*88.2 which is a bit weird
24*48 is 1152 so that's still possible too

I would have liked 24*96...

You forgot that things are stereo, so you need to add another factor of two.
1411 kbps is 16 bit, 44.1 kHz, 2 channel - ie. CD quality stereo.

I don't know, but would guess that when Tidal say 1411 kbps FLAC, they mean it's CD-quality but streamed as FLAC rather than PCM. Wouldn't make much sense otherwise.

When I rip a CD to flac, I get somewhat variable reports on the achieved bit rate, which depends on the nature of the content. 1411 kbps is within the range typically reported, so I'd say their broadcast is CD quality.
