Hi all. I'm trying to add the URL for the new "This American Life" spinoff podcast called "Serial". I can add the URL to my podcast list, and it shows up in podcast list in LMS and even allows me to pick one of four episodes. But it won't play in my squeezeboxes (shows up in active playlist, and shows movement for about 3 seconds then reverts back to 0 on the counter with never any audio). One thing I notice is that the file type in the LMS playlist window is "0, mp3 Radio". When I play other podcasts, it is something like "64kbps CBR, mp3 Radio" The URL is:

http://feeds.serialpodcast.org/serialpodcast

I can play it from the web, etc., but just not from the squeezeboxes using LMS or mysb.com. Can anyone else get this to work? If not, is there something odd about it. Seems to be an mp3 podcast as far as I can tell.
http://serialpodcast.org/

Any thoughts?

(p.s. I know I can download the mp3 files, but I prefer to simply stream them via podcast app as I do with many other podcasts, including "This American Life". )

Has something changed with the podcast plugin ???? All mine is gone ......??

I think the server is returning the MIME type as "application/octet-stream" which in default LMS is set up to be mp4 - in which case it will fail.

If you don't play MP4 you could change the types.conf file and move the MIME "application/octet-stream" from mp4 to the mp3 set of MIME types.

hmmm, I do play some mp4 so hate to change anything. Is this some sort of error the provider of the podcast has made with how they have labeled things on their end? Or something odd on the LMS side of things that this podcast happens to uncover?

I think it is a grey area - "application/octet-stream" is a generic MIME type. I've seen it applied to most types of http traffic including txt , html, video as well as mp4 and mp3.

Not all MP4 stream use it just like not all MP3 podcast use it - I suggest make the change and see what breaks.

As a general point you should use the XML feed for the podcasts http://feeds.serialpodcast.org/serialpodcast?format=xml rather then generic page just in case server deliver wrong format. In the XML podcast format - the files are tagged "audio/mpeg" which in LMS types.conf is MP3 but I think server still adds MIEM application/octet-stream so LMS still opts to assume MP4.

thanks. I'll play with it later when I get a chance. (p.s. I have used the xml feed too, same problem)

FWIW: I thought I had removed that mapping (application/octet-stream ->
mp4) back in march (in 7.8+), as it usually points out an incorrectly
configured server. But it could be serving up anything.

Same problem for me with this podcast (which happens to be the number one podcast in the world?). I get failed to parse message. All other podcasts work fine. i have both http://feeds.serialpodcast.org as well as the longer one you used

never could get this podcast to play on my squeezeboxes. In the end I just subscribed to it on the podcast app on my iphone and listen to it while exercising via headphones. Definitely something odd about how these particular podcast files are created. Something minor I'm sure in the header, etc. It is the only podcast I've never been able to get working via my squeezeboxes.

Don't forget that many podcasts are available via TuneIn (Radio on LMS) -- I access Serial (and a few other problematic podcasts) on my Squeezeboxes that way.

Aha! thanks for that. Never thought about that approach. I found Serial on TuneIn and it's working perfectly on my squeezeboxes.

It's available on SoundCloud so works on Squeezecloud and ickStream. I find ickStream's search to be a bit better.
