Daniel:

Thanks for your detailed instructions. A few questions:

1. I was going to try something similar, but got stumped when Fink
wanted to install a new version of xfree86 in place of Apple's X
windows. This a big problem for me since I depend heavily on Apple's X
system (for matlab). So how to get mplayer onto a mac, but not muck up
one's X installation?

2. You state:

> "/Library/PreferencePanes/SlimServer.prefPane/Contents/server/
> transcoder_proxy.pl

But you don't have semicolon's on the send of the lines???

3. Wondering if it is worth trying to duplicate what you did if you
still can't get it to play anything? I doubt I know more than you about
this...

4. If you get this working, could you try adding WMA streams?
Supposedly these should work since mplayer should play them...

5. I am happy to test things. Please let me know how I could help...

Thanks, Mike

Sorry, don't know about this. Might be best to ask the fink people.

Note that you can always follow the instruction on the AlienBBC web
page. They are supposed to work. The point of my instructions is that
they don't require any compiling during installation, or anything
that a Mac but not Unix user would find difficult.

I wonder if " followed by ; translates to an emoticon in some mail
programs. I've checked what I sent and that definitely did end the
line with trasncoder_proxy.pl followed by " followed by ;

It's not impossible that I just did something silly somewhere, which
is why I hoped someone else would try. I am checking further with
Jules.

That's up to Jules to advise, I wouldn't know what was needed.

Well, simply seeing if it works on your system even though not on
mine would help. As I indicated, I'm sure the reason I can't get it
to play is not something deep. As I said, a working version will need
almost everything in my instructions, so you don't lose much by
trying.
