I have to agree with you on this one. I'm pretty technical but I like to walk before I run. Somehow I don't think starting with Linux fire-walling is a good recipe for success. I mean if If you mention a firewall to "Joe Sixpack" he's most likely going to pull out a match and a spare piece of drywall off the back of the truck. I think actually learning how to install and configure a basic distro might be step one for me.

You have high expectations of the typical user. I work with Linux daily and
configuring ipchains and iptables is no big deal... However, is it really
something you think that joe 6 pack can easily do?

... or learn how to configure the firewall to allow the services you need to
work. It's not hard.
