I have a library of songs which were given to me, for example the Billboard Greatest Hits collection by year (MP3 files). About half of them play on my Squeezebox 2 (very early original unit - pre wifi even) but they all play on my Squeezebox Classic. Songs seem like they play based on output on Squeezebox 2 screen and Logitech Music Player, but no audio is generated. I cannot figure out what it is about these mp3's that causes the output to be silent on this one device (they play fine on iTunes as well).

Bitrate 160 kbs
Sample rate 44.1 kbz

What's the firmware version on the problem Squeezbox 2 ?

It is firmware version 40. Not 100% sure if I have Squeezebox 1 or Squeezebox 2. Purchased around 2001 I believe, which makes me think its actually a SB1. Same question applies, although I see this unit is more limited in formats. My songs seem to be MP3 files however.

It is firmware version 40.

You have an SB1 not a SB2.

The Sb1 is more limited in its playback capability and so the problem is in your LMS setup which is probably missing some transcoding support or the transcode support is not functional or has been disabled.

Give details on your LMS and the underlying server system.

Running LMS on Mac OS 10.6.8 server (older machine so can't upgrade Mac software). LMS is :

I'm not familiar with OSX so cannot comment on likely problems.

Can you identify a file that always plays OK on SB Classic but always fails on the SB1.
If so give details of the audio format.
When you try to play this on SB1 - is any error message shown ? if no error does elapsed time increment continually or does it reset to zero after about 5-10 secs.

File seems to be basic MP3. I did not rip it so I can't give details. Billboard 1980 Dim All The Lights (Donna Summer). Not sure that helps.

I activated LAME and that seems to have solved the problem, whatever it was
