Slimserver does not connect to an outside server for artwork. If you are seeing
artwork when you browse by artwork, the server may have found an image in the
ID3 tags of one or more of the mp3 files. Also, cover.jpg isn't the only
filename that can be used. Folder.jpg, albumartsmall.jpg, thumb.jpg are also
valid.

If you want to add artwork to your collection, you need to do that manually via
amazon.com. There are some tools that can help. several users have written
scripts to grab images automatically from amazon, or if you are not comfortable
with Perl, there is an application called Tag & Rename that handles file
tagging, but can also download artwork and either create the cover.jpg or embed
the image in the ID3 tags. I believe iTunes can also do this.

Really? I wonder where my artwork has come from then. ITunes doesnt
automatically download artwork (or at least if it does it wasn't
displaying it yet when i 'browsed by artwork' in SlimServer i had
quite a lot.

I'd love to tell you there is an automatic generator that would create artwork
based on the inherent remnanats ot psychic energy embedded in the melody
itself, resulting in the true artwork as it was before the artists even
realised what they wanted...but there is nothing all that fancy about
slimserver. There is no magic, the artwork you see is either embeded or
available as one of the filenames. I suspect its in the mp3 files themselves
since jpg/gif files are rather obvious to see. If you use something like
tag&rename you can look at the id3 artwork. I wouldn't put it past iTunes to
be using some apple-ised version of artwork storage that woudln't pick up on
the id3 jpg's. Consider yourself lucky. most people have to spend a lot of
effort gathering all the artwork.

such a device would be terribly confused by Yes and Asia albums, I'm sure.

It was easier for a while when my Amazon utility worked, but
the last set of changes that Amazon did to their website
made my code get flakey. I have to blame it on them,
it can't be that my code was flakey to begin with....

I have been putting out new versions and inflicting them on
willing alpha testers, but it
is not there yet.

For those brave, check out the page at
http://www.pfarrell.com/music/slimserver/slimsoftware.html
and see if I can get it working well in the next couple of weeks.

:-)

I understood that iTunes used to automatically fish artwork from
Amazon but that Apple had been asked to knock it on the head. My
suspicion was that Slim was doing something similar in the background.

All my MP3s are ripped from CD so theres nothing there that has not
been put there by a tool i've used. I did find a tool that was
pulling stuff in for iTunes but there seemed to be art that existed in
iTunes but not Slim and vice versa. I concluded that there was a plug
in at work and stopped getting them myself.

This was the Album art importer for windows i used and I'll be trying
it again. It's a bit prone to crashing but did retrieve a lot.

I wrote it to work primarily with FLAC files
but it handles ID3 tags in mp3 files as well. Not
all the versions, but those that I have to test with.

But, its pretty buggy this week. Next week, maybe I'll
find why it is so flakey
