Over the last 24 hrs all the BBC national channels fail to play - the station info appears on screen but there's no sound. Can others confirm this?

On Tunein site the channels fail to play also, but a message appears saying the channel is not available at the moment.

6music and R4 play OK for me but I'm outside UK and so Tunein plays 48kbps WMA format.

I think that's the problem - the streams are wma format (which have never played on my setup!). I think previously they were AAC - but seem to have changed format ...

Radio 4 was playing fine this morning through the iPlayer plugin (I don't use Tunein). I'm in the UK.

The Tune-in URL used to have options about which formats to return. Perhaps (because of adding metadata) they are limtiing BBC to WMA and perhaps the BBC geo-ip lock is messing things up (e.g. Tune-in is not in UK and so it will get a non UK WMA URL which cannot be played from the UK unlike the AAC URL)

Okay - thanks. So, you confirm that the issue is with Tunein no longer offering AAC?

Is there a list of overseas wma stream urls anywhere?

I don't know if Tune-in ever offered AAC on BBC but if you try adding "&formats=aac, wma" to the Tune-in URL only WMA URls are returned

Below URL has a useful list of BBC URLs (you need to click on the arrows to expand list). For live the BBC will return an WMA URL according to your location.

What do you to test with the URL ?

Thanks for the info. I wanted to set up a couple of favourites for BBC 5 and BBC 4 - guess I could do that just as easily via iPlayer plugin.

I switched to mysb, com and when I play the tunein favourite there then it plays wma okay. Think there must be a gremlin in my lms server setup which is refusing to play the same favourite when locally selected. Investigating further.

They did; I have been getting AAC from the BBC via TuneIn for at least the past few years. I just checked and confirmed that I'm now getting WMA.

I've reinstalled lms - still can't get wma to play on Touch. If I switch Touch to mysb.com then the wma streams play.

The failed streams often report 'connection reset by local host' or they load but there's no sound.

After a lot of reconfiguring, testing with vpn, etc. I give up on this problem!

There's no way the BBC wma streams will play on my system - consistently getting 'Connection reset by local host'.

Are you using a proper VPN or one with a "smart" DNS to make it appear as if your system is in the UK just for DNS lookup ?

Okay - using te beebotron url for Radio 4:

Native dns - plays via VLC

True vpn - plays via VLC

smart dns - fails to play via VLC

With LMS - fails to play with the smart and native settings - I rebooted the LMS server for each of the settings.

LMS has a two stage analysis or URLS/playlist and perhaps it is not using your DNS (IIRC years ago openDNS was used) - perhap you should check by enabling logging for network.asyncdns

A workaround may be to avoid playlist and minimise DNS lookups by using the real BBC URLs

BBC has many WMA URLs inside a playlist. The mulitple URLs are to provide load balancing. Below are example of one of the URLs for UK and non UK users.

Non-UK user mms://wmlive-nonacl.bbc.net.uk/wms/bbc_ami/radio4/radio4_bb_live_int_ep1_sl1
UK user mms://wmlive-acl.bbc.co.uk/wms/bbc_ami/radio4/radio4_bb_live_eq1_sl0

do these work for you ?

The non-UK works - UK fails

If only non UK works - then it sounds like BBC geo lock have got around the VPN and/or smart DNS

Ah - but the streams work if I play on VLC using PC with vpn.

Is there a way to force LMS to use the openDNS address? My system is set-up to use smart dns via the router.

On the other hand - why do the streams play okay if I switch the Touch to mysb.com?

What is the MMS url which VLC is playing ( I think you need to go into Tools menu to find it)

As a control point the URL http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/r4.asx does not play for me on LMS or VLC but the mms url will play. I think the BBC have done something weird with their WMA playlist. This messing with UK/non-UK WMA URLs happens about once a year although I don't remember the asx URLs being broken before.

For another mysb.com test - you could add "#slim:noscan=1" at the end of the UK mms URL (i.e. mms://wmlive-acl.bbc.co.uk/wms/bbc_ami/radio4/radio4_bb_live_eq1_sl0#slim:noscan=1 )- this will avoid mysb.com doing dns lookups.

If I use the vpn, then the asx url - with vpn - the playing url is :

mms://wmlive-acl.bbc.co.uk/wms/bbc_ami/radio4/radio4_bb_live_ep1_sl0

So, it plays the correct UK url.

(not sure I understand the mysb.com command advice).

OK this morning LMS prompted me to restart because plugins had been updated (never tells me which ones). After this, live BBC radio wouldn't play, but the 'listen again' section would. I looked at the plugin settings and noticed that the live and on demand stream preferences were different. Made them both AAC>FlashAAC>FlashMP3>WMA and now both work fine.

The mysb.com server is not in the UK and normally as part of playing a stream trhe mysb server tests the URLs. If mysb.com tests a UK only URL - it will be refused and so UK only url will not play on a UK based played connected to mysb.com. If you add "#slim:noscan=1" onto an URL (i.e. mms://wmlive-acl.bbc.co.uk/wms/bbc_ami/radio4/radio4_bb_live_ep1_sl0 #slim:noscan=1 ) - then mysb.com will not test the URL and so you can play a UK only URL on a UK based player attached to mysb.com . If using a Touch or Radio attached to mysb.com then when using the BBCiPlayer Applet t URL processing is done within the Touch/Radio by the Applet and not by mysb.com server and so should not not have these Uk/Not UK issues

Thanks.

Got a workaround:

I set the LMS server to a fixed address and changed the dns-nameserver to 8.8.8.8

Tunein BBC wma streams now working!
