Alien BBC overview

[Graham Ridgway at home]

It would get me a fabulous number of brownie points if I could get BBC R4
over my slimp system. I currently have a Psion Wavefinder which is not
reliable enough. So could someone confirm that this is what AlienBBC does?

I am running a Slackware server although my Linux capabilities are limited
to say the least!

Also can someone point me to an AlienBBC overview pls?

Absolutely, all this and more.... (All national and most local
channels, all the listen again archive all listed for you to
browse through, etc.)

If you're running Linux it's a good start. I'm running Fedora
Core 2, and installation of AlienBBC (MPlayer based) was a
breeze. The only catch was having to edit transcoder* to
give it the correct path to lame.

If you can, then go the MPlayer route. Setting up XINE/Alienstream
was a real pain when I set my original installation up some
time ago.

If you're running a recent SlimServer then the AlienBBC plugin
should already be in the installation for you, so you've just
got to setup MPlayer and make sure the path to Lame is
correct....

Doesn't have any details on Slackware, but hopefully it
won't be too much of a problem. I'm sure there must be some other
Slackware users on the list that could offer help.

Hi Graham.

Firstly... Yes... AlienBBC definately _DOES_ work for Radio 4. In
fact... if it didn't wake me up with it every morning, I'd probably
never get out of bed!

In terms of an overview... take a look at the site
(http://www.mrtickle.org/alienbbc.html).

But, basically... it'll play the following:

1. Main BBC Stations Live Streams (but not World Service - it uses a
wonky low-bitrate codec that nothing speaks)
2. The main 'BBC Listen Again' stuff (which is basically what you can
navigate to from the 'BBC Player' window)
3. All of the Radio 4 'A to Z' of old broadcasting.
4. All of BBC7's Last week of Broadcasting.
5. All the BBC Local Radio stations that BBC provides currently.
6. A bunch of other random radio stations that people have asked us to add.

Finally... if you're ninja enough editing a playlist file, you can use
it to stream just about anything that mplayer can decode. This includes
OGG files (less important now Craig's OGG fixes are in slimserver
itself), WMA streams that it'll speak, most RA streams, etc.

Hi Jack.

Playlists are stored wherever slimserver is configured to store them.
The box for selecting them is in the 'Server Settings' page on the web
interface. If the box is currently blank, then create an empty
directory, point that to it, and put 'em in there

Dude, that is so... deep I'll muck around with this some more today and
see what I can put together. I'd figured out the playlist thing earlier,
but I'm still having trouble with some RA streams and need to manually
troubleshoot with transcoder_proxy.pl.
