Various Artists Albums Won't Show Under Various Artists

Hi All,

Got an odd little issue that's recently developed that I couldn't find an existing thread on when I searched... Basically almost all my compilation and similar albums which are all correctly tagged with "Various Artists" in the Album Artist/Band tag are not showing under the name Various Artists when you browse via artist (2 out of about 200 albums show). I have the settings set to show compilations under all artists, and they were showing previously okay. The only thing I have done to change anything is upgrade my VortexBox software to the latest version (2.1?) but assumed tat hadn't changed LMS in any way? Any idea what might be causing this...?

P.S. I have cleared and rescanned library; retagged the album artist tag for all the albums; changed the compilation album settings and repeated, etc, but to no avail...

Not sure why the behavior has changed for you. If you actually tag the Album Artist as "Various Artist" what you are telling the system is that this album is by an Artist/Band actually called "Various Artist" rather than identifying as a compilation which LMS then would show under it's "Various Artist" category. There are several threads which talk about different ways to approach tagging of compilation albums. I believe if there is no ALBUM ARTIST tag and if not all the tracks on the album have the same ARTIST tag, then LMS determines that is a compilation album and it will show under the Various Artist category. Additionally, you can set the COMPILATION tag and that should force LMS to treat the album as a compilation album even if you've set the ALBUM ARTIST tag.
I know there are different approaches to this, and there are some settings in LMS as to how it treats compilations. I would NOT set the ALBUM ARTIST to "Various Artist" as you indicate, but rather set the compilation flag.

Hhmmm, I replied but it isn't showing - anyway thanks tcutting - I think you indirectly answered something else for me and as you hypothesise I might be causing LMS to get confused - I'll revisit what you've said at the weekend and have a fresh fiddle with the various artists settings... Cheers.
