Hello,
I have 4 or 5 Squeezebox devices in my home. I am not a heavy user partly because my Slim server has not been working well for the last 12-18 months.
I am running Version: 7.7.2 - r33893 @ Wed Mar 14 05:47:42 PDT 2012 the current LMS version. For whatever reason, when I clear my library of ~19,000 tracks and rescan, LMS says there is only 1 artist (JayZ coincidentally!). The only way I can navigate my music library is by folder, of which I have about 26 at the root (A through Z) and then inside of which I have on folder per artist (first name, last name). This always worked for years until OH MY..... I use Tag&Rename to maintain all tags.....I don't think that is the problem but I'm not 100% sure.
I tried deleting the entire cache folder contents tonight, then rescan, based on some forum posts, but still same result.
Please help me!

solution found!
This was REALLY STUPID!! Up until a year or two ago I had no significant problems with SBS/LMS, then suddenly 99.9% of my artist information disappeared and I needed to select music by traversing folders.
The solution was to clear out the Artist column and populate the Artist value in the Album Artist column only.
This is a REALLY STUPID code change in LMS.....or if there is a logical reason to do this, it should have at least been communicated clearly. I see that a bunch of people have been having problems with this. Let's hope it is stable now and doesnt break! (My fingers are crossed!).

Something else must be peculiar about your tags. You say "a bunch of people have been having problems with this", but it has definitely not been the case with the vast majority of users. I have 1000s of tracks that have Artist tags but nothing in Album Artist and LMS reads them just fine. "Fixing" it by moving all your Artist info over to Album Artist is only masking some other issue with your tagging.

I agree, I don't have any Album Artists tags and have never experienced this problem. Something else going on....

What if you have empty album artists tags ?
I have seen files with empty tag fields, IMO either you have info in the tag or you should remove it completely ?--------------------------------------------------------------------

Good point. My album artist tags either have content or don't exist.
