SB Media Server (LMS) running on Iomega TV Boxee

Has anybody already experience with SB Media Server (LMS) running on an Iomega TV Boxee?

I have an Iomega TV Boxee here with 2TB hard disk installed. Would e great to have the LMS running on it too!

hmmm, of all the installs I've read about, I've never seen a word about this. So probably not. But you say "too". You only need to run LMS on a single instance in your LAN. You might want to stream to your boxee from the LMS on another computer. You may be able to do this if you use the DLNA/UpNP server function in LMS. But LMS DLNA streaming is hit and miss with different players and in general DLNA is clunky compared with the LMS approach to audio streaming unless you use something like Whitebear.

p.s. A vortexbox setup serves virtually all format videos to the boxee. The boxee is the recommended video player on the VB forums. ;-)

The Iomega Boxee is for the video streaming to a TV.
Since there is a 2 TB disk in it, it would perhaps be an interesting idea to store my music files there too, run the LMS as well on the Iomega box and stream the music from there to the SB Touch I also have.

    Would this work?

Yep, I know what a boxee is, did you see my reply above about boxee. And I see that Toby10 has linked to a boxee discussion that says it won't work. Note that the boxee discussion is not entirely correct currently, as Logitech did add DLNA/UpNp to LMS. But it would be a horribly clunky, reverse engineering, frustrating way to feed a squeezebox.

edit: I see in rereading my reply that it wasn't clear that I knew what a Boxee is. To be clear, I'm very familiar with them, and I am 99.9% sure that it would be impossible to run LMS on a boxee.

OK, but what I read in the link http://forums.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=53489 is:

"Squeezebox Touch can run its own "tiny" server built-in which allows it to access directly attached storage and I suspect you should also be able to access network shares, though that part I have not verified myself.

So to accomplish the OP's goals, all that is needed is for a PC on the local network to be able to access the disks attached to Boxee from Windows Explorer or the Mac Finder. At that point you can configure Squeezebox Server or Logitech Media Server on that system and point its music library to the correct SMB path by IP or share name. It will then index all your music and the Squeezebox devices on the network will connect to that server directly to pull database information and the music."

Instead, could you run the Logitech Media Server package on the Iogema TV Boxee, use the music files als stored on the Iomega HD and stream that then to the SB Touch as the player (connected to my amplifier)?

Short answer is no. Longer answer has a lot of "ifs".

    1. If you can hack the boxee system to install LMS. I assume the boxee is running some sort of linux OS. You'd need to be able to install one of these linux versions of LMS (and all this would require serious linux hacking skills):
    http://downloads.slimdevices.com/Log...Server_v7.7.2/

    2. and even if "1" works, if you are able to be happy with likely very slow library scanning and very slow browsing of files in LMS in the boxee (much slower than what I found unacceptable in the readynas duo)

I could eventually (with help) install a riding lawn mower engine in a 1975 Mercedes Benz sedan and make the car move under its own power. It would be a lot of work, and the result would not be very much fun to use, but it *could* be done. I'd say this compares to trying to install LMS on a boxee.

And I thought you mentioned that you wanted something that just worked well and you weren't interested in the "hobby" of hardware, etc. Even the hardcore tweakers around here that work on installing LMS on things that it was never intended for haven't tried to hack the boxee to install LMS. And many folks that hang out around here use the boxee as a video streamer.

Seems unlikely to me, but what you need to know is:

    1. What kind of CPU does the (architecture and speed) Iomega TV Boxee have?
    2. How much RAM?
    3. What is the underlying OS?
    4. Can you install 3rd party software (LMS) on it? I doubt there is a menu option for it, so then the question becomes can you hack into it via ssh or telnet with root/admin rights?

I looked at the "Technical specs" for the Boxee at their website and it doesn't answer any of these questions. It looks to me like a typical closed system in which the user is not supposed to look behind the curtain, installation of anything except standard firmware voids the warranty, etc. If you want to pursue this route you'll need to dig deeper into forums and users groups to see if the hardware is adequate for running LMS (questions 1 & 2). If it is, then you need to figure out Q3 and Q4. It's a very similar situation to installing LMS on unsupported NASs.

That is precisely what the Boxee forum link says you cannot do. As suggested in here you might find some backdoor hack to accomplish this but that is not officially supported by Boxee or SqueezeBox so I'd expect issues. Do a search on "Boxee" in these forums, there are dozens of references to Boxee including what you are attempting.
