A big thank you!
All is working, and well :-)
I didn't quite heed your warning about a newer gcc, but when switching to 4.6 everything "just worked". Well, more or less. I did have to change the path to the perl binary it checks for at the start of the buildme script but apart from that and commenting out Class::XSAccessor (which I couldn't get to build) I didn't have to do anything. I could never get the buildme script to point out the gcc46 for all modules so in the end I created a symlink for it while building, replacing the gcc in /usr/bin/.
I did one more thing. I checked out both the server and CPAN part of the 7.7 trunk, which made it quite easy to play around with. Whenever I needed to toss some tests out I could just revert. Also the changes are now easily found by a simple diff, and if I need to do updates in the future it'll be done in a flash.
Again, thank you!
