Hi!
I'm considering buying the Squeezebox Touch in order to play music I've got stored on my QNAP NAS (TS-439 Pro II) on my stereo system. The other alternative I'm looking at is the Sonos Connect, so I'm looking for some advice to help me decide (knowing full well you guys might not be completely impartial).
Setting the server software up shouldn't be a problem. I'm an experienced Linux admin so doing a bit of hands-on configuration and scripting is all in a day's work.
1) Is the software itself stable? Does it ever crash on either the server or client side?
2) Do Logitech release software updates to the players and if so, generally how often?
3) Can I use the server to stream music to other (Android-based) players?
4) I read on another forum that the Squeezebox supports higher-quality FLAC than the Sonos does. Is this correct?
If you have any other input on whether the Squeezebox or the Sonos (or a completely different one) is the better system, I'd appreciate that too.
Thanks,
/Uffe

2) Yes, usually bug fixes or new services added. Frequency of these hardware updates depends on several factors. Firmware updates can be obtained & installed by simply connecting your Touch to either the updated LMS server or MySqueezeBox.com.

1) I find the software very stable. There have been releases in the past that had some problems, but they were quickly updated (for ex. 7.6.0 had some headaches, but 7.6.1 fixed them quickly)
2) yes, and you can update often (every 6 months or so), or not update at all. Some folks are using versions that are 4 years old....
3) not sure about that. probably not.
4) yes, sonos can only do 24/48. SB Touch can do 24/96 natively and if you install the free triode EDO plugin it can do 24/192, either through USB out or S/PDIF to a DAC that supports this.
I'd say your real choices are SB or Sonos. I'm biased of course (see my signature). And I own SB stuff not because it is cheaper than Sonos. That aspect was irrelevant in my decision. SB has the ability to have more flexibility, 3rd party plugins/apps that improve useability, etc. Sonos is a very closed system. And above all, sonos can handle about 60,000 tracks maximum without some clunky workarounds. I have way more tracks than that.Location 1: VortexBox Appliance 6TB (2.2) > LMS 7.7.2 > Transporter, Touch, Boom, Radio w/Battery (all ethernet)

Thanks everyone for your input.
Just arrived home with my Squeezebox Touch, hooked it up to my WLAN, fired up the server on my QNAP NAS, and everything worked without a hitch.
Yay!
