Manual SB Radio firmware update - how?

I hope someone can help with this because every time a new firmware comes out I'm tearing my hair out, I did manage to get the last update installed after a fair bit of head scratching and I couldn't find any logical reason that it suddenly started working hence I'm here asking for help. I've searched extensively and everyone seems to suggest it updates automatically with a new server software install. This never happens in my experience. It works on my SB3, if theres ever an update after installing the latest server software it flashes up a prompt to install it by holding brightness. The Radio doesn't do this. The server and both squeezeboxes are not connected to the internet as I only use them to play my own local music files. They're all hardwired rather than wifi and can't be connected to the internet so I can't do the online update.

So my question is how do I force the manual update? I checked in the server/firmware folder and found that the latest software update hadn't put the latest baby.version and baby_7.7.2_r9663.bin in there (which it didn't do last time either, should it not do this?) so I downloaded those 2 files from http://update.slimdevices.com/update/firmware/7.7.2/ and put them in there myself. Since they've been there I've tried going into software update on the Radio and it doesn't seem to do anything other than bring up a menu with 2 options, cancel and help. I tried going through diagnostics then software update which according to one search result should offer a menu that allows an internet update or a local update but I don't get these options on my Radio, I get the same as the other menu, cancel and help. I know I can try the firmware roll back with power and rew but if I do that I'm worried I'll never even get 9557 back on let alone the new one and I'll get stuck on an even older firmware.

Currently on baby_7.7.1_r9557.bin firmware and using Windows for the server.

Please help me! if I knew a way to just set it off installing when new updates came out I'd be happy.

LMS get updates from the Internet ( mysqueezebox.com servers i think ) they are never included in the installer, fw can upgrade independently of server , sometimes there are several version of player fw during a servers life span.

And I think they worry about download size/speed for all the fw , the Touch fw for example includes the whole server so the server package would be more than twice as big ( personally I think it's ridiculus in 2012 just include everything )

Btw how old are your sb3 fw they autoupdate these days no more press brigthness ?

You may have software update turned of in server settings this includes both the server itself and player fw , so a server set to not update does not update anything .

Btw the files should go in the updates folder in the cache I think .

Yeah sb3 is right. Checked that against the versions I downloaded the radio fw from. They didn't update it this time around. I know they sometimes release firmware independent of the server releases.

Is the cache folder the one in the all users folder? I think I read about that, I'll try putting the update files in there and report back.

I agree, I'd rather have a bigger download that updates everything correctly than spend hours trying manual updates that are very unreliable at best.

There is a specific update folder in the cache folder

    I've done it, cue celebration!

For anyone who finds this thread having the same issues I copied the baby.version and baby_7.7.2_r9663.bin files into the updates folder in the cache. Which is in all users/application data/squeezebox I think off the top of my head. It's listed in your config within the server application. Also I set automatically update in the server (think it was in web control). Then a simple reboot kicked the update off. Quite why this information is so hard to come by is beyond me.

Thanks for the help guys, I've made myself a reminder for next time too

Thats because it's the defaullt settings a virgin install autopdates and connects to mysqueezebox.com provided you follow the wizard during setup .

People usually ask the opposite Q how the #"%¤#"#" do I turn of these updates

Yeah I only turned off auto update last night when I was trying to force manual update. Didn't realise all updating relies on the auto update setting (misleading).

It connecting to the internet is no use to me, my music and squeezeboxes are all offline. That's why I was doing a manual update.

With the Radio, I don't believe that you can do manual updates. With the older players it's just a matter of downloading the firmware and .version files and placing them in the cache/updates folder. With the new players it seems that the server must itself first download the firmware from the 'net before it will send an update notification to the Radio.

I filed a bug/request about this some time ago:

    http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=17526

(With the Touch and the Controller I believe you may be able to place firmware updates on an SD card, but the Radio has no such ability.)

If you manually places the files in the updates folder and turn on updates it works, but as you actually turned on updates you better not be connected to the internet .then your files get overwritten with the latest ? that’s how i think it works stephentw just did that I done it a long time ago can't remember the circumstance,
pity that radio does not have the SD card slot that Touch and Controller has easy to upgrade then .

Manual SB Radio firmware update - how?

Hi, everyone. I have to confess to being totally confused by the technical
    talk on this forum. 'Sorry.

I bought a SB last year and was so disgusted about getting it set up I
didn't use it for months. But now I have it set up to play Internet things
like sports talk, Old-Time Radio, and news. I go to the "Favorites" file on
the SB and it shows me a list of stations I've saved and I select one. Most
of the time it works okay. Sometimes the stream won't play that day but
will on another day. I don't understand why this happens, but I am familiar
with the C.Crane WiFi radio and know that sometimes the radio needs to be
    reset by just unplugging it.

I have never been notified that I need to do an update and wouldn't know
how to do that unless it prompted me. I never go to anything on my PC (as
far as the SB is concerned). I have the little icon on my bottom tray on my
PC (Windows7) for the Logitech Media Server but I never open it. Should I?

Any simple basic information would be much appreciated. I am not anxious to
call Logitech Customer Service as they sure didn't help me when I first
bought the SB. Thanks so much.

    B. Howard
