    Nightly Scanning Getting Stuck ..

    Running 7.7.2 - r33893

Every night, I have my scanning set to rescan new and changed media files. Every night for (at least) a week now it gets stuck. I'm wondering if the problem is related to my HTPC (where LMS resides) is set to power down for several hours. I have changed the rescan time to one hour earlier, but I don't think it will solve the problem. Because a rescan never takes more than 15-20 minutes, yet my HTPC is not set to shut down for an hour from my present scan time. And for the past several days, despite the HTPC daily reboots, the "scan progress" info on the "Server Settings/Information" tab states:

"Scanning new music files: D:\My Music (1 of 140) Running 22:07:00"

Twenty two hours? And the most recent shut down and reboot was slightly over 6 hours ago. And despite repeatedly pressing the "Abort scan" button, it won't abort the scan. Is this a known problem?

Have you tried scanning those new files manually and does the scan complete? If not, it's likely a problem with one or more of the files. Check the server log file.

I just looked at the server logs and it shows that a lot of files to which I have shortcuts have lost their associations. Not sure how that happened as I haven't moved any of those files, but maybe that's why the scans are hanging? If so, re-associating all of those files is going to be a nightmare! (I currently still have a mix of mp3's and flac's. As I am replacing mp3's with flac's, I am "temporarily" using shortcuts in my mp3 folders to reference the higher resolution files. Once most/all mp3's are replaced, then I won't need shortcuts anymore).

Were the files moved? Shortcuts don't usually all of a sudden point to the wrong place.

Well, yesterday, I had the "grand" idea of trying a piece of software that was supposed to find orphaned shortcuts. I used it on my Music folder on the HTPC. It found >500 of them. I then by accident deleted ALL of them. So, all of that work to make shortcuts is moot. But LMS STILL got stuck on its nightly scan. I cannot manually abort the scan. Only a full reboot will stop it. Thus, every day now I cannot access my music folder without getting the "Music Folder is not available while scanning." I understand that bad shortcuts (and I still have no idea why all of a sudden those shortcuts went bad because I have done nothing to my music files/folders for months!) causing the scan to lock up, but now that the bad shortcuts no longer exist, I can't understand why the scans are still locking up.

Way kind of Scan ? A "clear and rescan everything " or a "new and changed " .

I would try a manual "clear and rescan everything " and look in scan and server log for cues . After some time and enough " new and changed scans " it needs a clear scan .

Deleting the whole dB or clear LMS cache folder ?

You can also try subsets of your library as music library to see if the problems resides in a particular part of the library .

Another idea is to try without your playlist if they also refer to files that's no longer where they should be, this should work anyway but I'm thinking that there is a lot broken links .

Sure that is no shortcuts anywhere , if they are wrong you could have a loop , a shortcut that eventually leads to a folder who has another shortcut that eventually leads back to where you where and it repeats itself .

Back like a bad habit. Daily. The scan is getting stuck on the same FLAC file (a good file) every day (not a shortcut). Clicking "abort scan" will NOT abort the scan. Only a total reboot of the computer will stop it. And that's a problem with it happening every day! I've tried using the "clear library and rescan everything" as well, and no enchilada. I've tried moving the offending file to a different folder, then run the "clear library and rescan everything" and it still gets stuck, looking for that file in the old location although it's no longer there. So it appears that it is NOT "clearing" anything.

I'm about ready to punt because this is making my library/Squeezeboxen almost unusable!

So if you temporarily remove that one FLAC file, all works ok? If so have you tried converting the file (FLAC > FLAC, and maybe retagging. Sounds like SB is having trouble with just that one file. LMS can struggle with some files that other players have no issues with.

No. I've moved the file, and it still gets stuck. Even though I moved it and then did a "clear library and rescan everything." It's still looking for that file in the old location, and thus it still gets stuck.
