Using SBS 7.5.1 Now....Do I really need to upgrade TO LMS ?

    Or should I?

Everything seems to be working fine for over a year on 7.51. Although I recently "upgraded" a SB3 with a SBT, and still have another SB3 and SBR in the mix. I am afraid to upgrade as things are rather stable, but I am wondering with the Squeezebox Touch if I would be better off for some reason on LMS? I have no other Logitech products in the mix. Checking the firmware on the SBT, I see it is running 7.7.2-r9663. I am not sure how it is able to pull that from my 7.5.1 SBS software, but somehow it seems to be running the latest anyways. I also am successfully running the EDO patch (it requires 7.7.*).

Basically I have had bad experience in the past with stability when trying/upgrading to the latest version of Squeezebox Server.... When I got to this level, everything was rock solid, so some guidance as to what I will really gain by taking the chance in upgrading would be appreciated.

    Thanks a bunch everyone!

if it is all working, no need to do anything of course. But I can say that 7.7.2 LMS has been very stable for me. But going from 7.5.1 to 7.7.2 is a major jump. Probably fine to update, but then again, if it ain't broke....

p.s. I'm wondering if you haven't someone connected to mysb.com occasionally and that's why the firmware is up to 7.7.2. That part seems odd (different firmware from underlying SbS/LMS).
    Location 1: VortexBox Appliance 6TB (2.2) > LMS 7.7.2 > Transporter, Touch, Boom, Radio w/Battery (all ethernet)
    Location 2: VBA 3TB (2.2) > LMS 7.7.2 > Touch > Benchmark DAC I, Boom, Radio w/Battery (all ethernet except Radio)
    Office: Win7(64) > LMS 7.7.2 > SqueezePlay
    Spares: VBA 4TB, SB3, Touch (3), Radio (3), CONTROLLER
Controllers: iPhone4S (iPeng), iPad2 (iPengHD & SqueezePad), CONTROLLER, or SqueezePlay 7.7 on Win7(64) laptop
Ripping (FLAC) - dbpoweramp, Tagging - mp3tag, Spotify

Thanks for your reply. Well, when turning on the Touch for the first time, I had to enter the required squeezebox.com (whatever it is called these days) login and password. I think at that point the firmware got updated to the latest (perhaps). I guess it is smart enough (on the Touch side) not to downgrade itself to match the SBS 7.5.1 code levels when locally connected, as it wasn't necessary.

The only thing I can see that isnt working as expected is that when I try to Fix Outputs at 100% in the audio section on the SBS, it doesn't actually stick on the Touch. If I try and do it on the Touch....it connects my music library to the Squeezebox.com site, instead of my SBS...... If I listen to my local server (I do this 100% of the time)..... the volume controls on the Touch still work...regardless of the setting on the SBS to fix outputs at 100%. So I have to make sure they are at 100% on the slider

On the LMS code...is it more/less/same as far as resource consumption on the compute side? I have a rather anemic Atom330 based server, and would be concerned about CPU requirements and relative performance. Are things better, by chance, on that front?

Not positive, but I believe that the general consensus is that the newer LMS versions may be a bit better on low-powered units. I recall some initial discussion about improved performance in the ReadyNas duo (original version) that is very much underpowered. LMS is a bit pickier about music file tags however. Was never an issue for me in a 70,000 file library, but my tags are in good shape. I can say that scanning my library became MUCH faster with newer versions (post 7.6.x).

Don't know about LMS... I thought that LMS was the 7.7.x versions, but it's been hard to keep up with what name goes with what release! I think the performance improvements came with the 7.6.x versions when Logitech made the switch to SQLite vs MySQL. The big performance difference was in the scanning of your library. I really don't think there's any difference if we're just talking about music playback between any of the versions as long as your device is supported. With LMS (7.7.x) there were all the additions to support DLNA devices, video and such which I'd guess added some overhead. Myself, I've been very happy on the 7.6.x release and have no reason to move beyond my current 7.6.1. As far as tightening up on tag reading goes, I think this was added in the 7.6.x release with the change to SQLite. When the tag reading was tightened there sure was a lot of chatter and gnashing of teeth, but if your tags are in order with matched case and all you should have no trouble moving to 7.6.x and beyond. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Volume control locking was not there in the initial release of Touch , it is partly a server side thing too, that may explain it.

Going trough old bugs indicate that a good 100% fixed volume was not implemented before 7.6.0 something .
And some intermediate server version did not lock the web-UI from changing the volume, but > = 7.6.0 it should be ok

There is an old hack for this , no longer necessary if you use a new version .
