Thread: mp4 audio

    mp4 audio

Is there any likelihood of LST software being modified to play mp4 audio?

It would be a boon and competitors such as SONOS already provide it.

    TIA

By mp4 do you mean DRM protected audio ?

LST can play m4a files in mpeg4 format.

yes, the TOUCH already natively plays itunes purchased (or ripped with itunes) files. But I think the ones *without* DRM are m4a rather than m4p (which are DRM protected). I'm not sure what a "mp4" file is? Do you mean m4p?

And SONOS will not play DRM m4p files either.

I mean *.mp4. I have loads of such files; WMP plays them, SONOS plays them but SB (and R83i) doesn't.

They're video files as often found on You Tube and other internet sites.

    SB plays m4a fine.

aha. video files. that's why I didn't know what they were. nope, far as I know, SB won't play these.

I think it's possible to extend the LMS mp4 handling by adding a custom-types.conf and custom-convert.conf file and
get LMS to invoke something like vlc or ffmpeg to strip off the video and pass the audio stream to the player.

Ok, that's clearer now, since *.m4a files are MP4 audio (MP4 being a "container"). Do you know what the encoding is for the audio in your *.mp4 files? I'm no expert on codecs, but it would seem that if the audio in the *.mp4 files is encoded in something that LMS already handles like AAC then it wouldn't be too huge a technical leap to support it. How much demand there is to convince Logitech or a 3rd party to invest development resources in *.mp4 is a separate matter.

If you mean also decoding the video data then I don't see that happening any time soon (ever?) with SB.
