    SEVERE issue with Synology

    Hi,

I bought the Squeezebox Touch a year or so ago and was playing music through a directly connected USB drive. As I put more and more music into that drive, the Touch started having issues as the notorious 'local music service has stopped' problem would show up. So I bought the Synology DS212+ NAS and put all my music on it (FLAC). I installed the Logitech Media Server on the NAS and I am ripping and pulling my hair now. Here are the issues:

    1. Switch on the NAS and try to play music via iPeng and it says music folder not available while scanning. If I go to the web based interface from the Synology panel, it says Rescanning Media Library. If I click more details it doesn't show any progress. If I let it be in that state for five hours even then it won't show any progress. If I let it in that state overnight then perhaps the next day it shows increased number of files and I can play something. However, the CPU of the NAS goes at 100% and the LMS hangs. I go to system information, disable and re enable LMS. Then AGAIN it says rescanning media library. So I abort scan and play music.

    2. This happens every time I bring the NAS back from sleep. I have installed the DS Finder on the iPod Touch but the interface is a b**ch! You have to login EVERY TIME, the remember me feature doesn't work. You have to go to the MOBILE version. Once there you have to select DESKTOP VERSION. ONLY then you can open the services tab of the system information from where you may disable and enable the LMS IF you had fingers as thin as match sticks because the zoom feature doesn't scroll down.

Should I set my Squeezebox Touch on fire and get a Sonos?

better to try and solve this problem with your NAS. You may find that the SONOS has just as much problem in getting its music files from your NAS. This doesn't sound like an LMS or SB hardware problem, but rather a NAS/network problem. Hopefully, some others will have ideas. I don't use Synology NAS, but it seems a number of forum members do use it successfully.

    Two suggestions:
    - Did you update to the latest firmware version?
    - The Synology has it's own DLNA server. This server starts reindexing it's media files when you startup the NAS. So if you startup you have two different media servers (the one built in and LMS) scanning the library. Try disabling the built in media server.

I have LMS running perfectly on a DS209. I also own a DS212+, if I can find some time this weekend I will have a look if I can reproduce your problem.

You can also have a look on the Synology forums. They have a separate section on LMS.

"music folder not available while scanning.": Thats because of SQLite, since Logitech switched from MySQL to SQLite LMS is faster but SQLite can only handle one writing connection to a database. Scanning is writing to it and browsing your directories would cause an database update of every folder you browse, so Logitech disabled access to folders during a scan.

Does LMS list any files or artists? You shuold see some if you cancel the scan, Im not sure if you see any during initial scan.

What is written to server.log and scanner.log? LMS writes to these files and you can see which files LMS currently scans.

Maybe you should create a folder, put only SOME files into it and let thie folder be your music folder. Then you can see how fast it will index it and if your files will be listed.

    @Shahab:

I tested your situation and I think I know what your problem is. On my DS212 the first media scan took about 3 hours to complete for about 30000 tracks. So it is pretty slow while scanning. Maybe there are ways to optimize that but I have no time to try this out. It may have to do with the fact that the DS212 has no built-in floating point processor.
So probably you are interrupting the first media scan every time by turning of your DS212. And every time you start it up it starts all over because it's initial scan did not finish. And because it is scanning iPeng cannot reach the database.
After the initial scan I do not have any issues whatsoever using the DS212 as media server. It starts up instantly.

So my suggestion is that on your computer you go to the LMS webinterface at htttp://<yourdiskstation>:9002 (On Synology the port for LMS is 9002). Then go to Settings -> Rescan Media Library. Then choose "Clear Library and rescan everything" and then push the RESCAN button. You can then click Scanning - View progress and wait patiently until it finishes. Because of the many interrupts I think it is better to clean the library.

    Hope this helps

I'd clear the LMS Cache file as well, then do a complete Wipe & Rescan.

I had severe issues with LMS 7.7< on my Synology. Downgraded to 7.6.1 again and my issues where solved. The Squeezebox server has been working on my Synology NAS'es flawlessly for the past 3 years now. I'm using iPeng too btw..

So my suggestion would be to downgrade to 7.6.1 if you don't need any of the stuff LMS brings to the party (and in many cases you won't). And if that doesn't help, there must be something wrong with your network.

i have the same isue with my 212+.when i do a scan it shows me on my squeezbox thats its finished but in the media server not. i log in the logitec media server with my laptop and discard the scanning.then its shows me the scan and everthing is working. it can not finish the scan for what reason ever.thats my personal workaround.
