Jenny Scheinman - Mischief and Mayhem

I've been listening to the new Jenny Scheinman recording, and it's a gem.

Scheinman is a jazz violinist (although she has recorded a kind of singer/songwriter album as well). She works extensively with Bill Frisell, and is featured quite a lot on Frisell's recent homage to John Lennon, "What We Are Saying".

On "Mischief and Mayhem" she takes a distinct turn towards the abstract and eccentric. In addition to her lovely but edgy jazz fiddling and truly excellent band, the recording features what seem to be found sounds, along with some nifty electronic effects (to say "synthesizer effects" doesn't quite capture the concept). The net effect is very compelling -- all of pleasantly melodic, jarringly refreshing and intellectually stimulating. Sometimes all at the same time.

Highly recommended. Available as a 320kbps download and CD on her website (jennyscheinman.com), as well as at the usual other places. You have to snoop around the website to find the download option (hint -- go to "store").

I'm also fond of her "The Rabbi's Lover", which has a slightly Oriental feel, a tad klezmerish perhaps. This one is on HDTracks, in basic CD quality flac.

You can also hear her in quite a different context on Bruce Cockburn's most recent CD, "Small Source of Comfort". She's recently been in his touring band, and there are a host of youtube videos to be found of various performances in this and other contexts.

This is a live performance, not a rip of the CD.

Reminds me of Ornette Coleman's Free Jazz release.

I agree the latest Jenny Scheinman is quite good. Plus thanks for the tip on the Bruce Cockburn recording, I will try to give it a listen.
