    Working at last!

Eventually I had to give up on the VortexBox approach - it just seemed too much trouble, for too little reward (I'll post more info on the VB forum).

Instead, I kind-of followed the advice given in response to this thread, installing via rpm, then using the Fedora software update GUI to install the 'missing' Perl packages (e.g. CGI, Log4Perl and a couple of others that were highlighted as missing when I tried to run the server from the command line).

Apologies that I don't have more details on what I installed, but I didn't really hold out much hope of it working, and, being a GUI, I don't have a record in the command line history. I then uninstalled the server (because it still wasn't starting correctly) and re-installed the rpm, that I downloaded from the SBS web site. Amazingly, this time around it all worked OK. It's hard to describe my elation at seeing the familiar web pages at localhost:9000 :-)

From this, I would guess that the rpm/yum installation dependencies aren't set up correctly in the distro - but that's no more than a guess. The workaround being to manually install these dependencies *before* installing the server rpm. Which is exactly the thing than the dependency list is meant to avoid. I guess those people who already have those dependencies installed will work just fine, but not for 'virgin' installs such as mine - again, just a guess.

Odd about your vortexbox experience. Typically, insert disc from iso, select install, and all done with complete system including LMS 7.7.2.
    Location 1: VortexBox Appliance 6TB (2.2) > LMS 7.7.2 > Transporter, Touch, Boom, Radio w/Battery (all ethernet)
    Location 2: VBA 3TB (2.2) > LMS 7.7.2 > Touch > Benchmark DAC I, Boom, Radio w/Battery (all ethernet except Radio)
    Office: Win7(64) > LMS 7.7.2 > SqueezePlay
    Spares: VBA 4TB, SB3, Touch (3), Radio (3), CONTROLLER
Controllers: iPhone4S (iPeng), iPad2 (iPengHD & SqueezePad), CONTROLLER, or SqueezePlay 7.7 on Win7(64) laptop
Ripping (FLAC) - dbpoweramp, Tagging - mp3tag, Spotify

Aha. I see you were using a raid setup. That does add complexity.

    RAID managed by BIOS

As far as I am aware, the RAID feature should be totally invisible to the OS, since it is managed by the mobo and BIOS, making the RAID appear as a single disk. So, the mystery remains (although I grant that there may still be something dodgy about VB on RAID that I am unaware of). Having said that, F16 seems perfectly happy with it.

    Thanks for this

You got me working with this after I did a major upgrade and decided on a complete re-install. My only comment is that I also added the RPM for perl-XML-Parser which I also seemed to need.

As you observe - pity all these extra dependencies are not included in the latest releases!

I have a new F17 system with a base install. I wouldn't recommend using CPAN to install perl modules... instead stick with the RPMs.

Based upon other threads here in the forum, I made sure the following RPMs were on the system:

    perl-AnyEvent
    perl-Event
    perl-Event-ExecFlow
    perl-Event-Lib
    perl-Event-RPC
    perl-YAML
    perl-YAML-LibYAML
    perl-YAML-Parser-Syck
    perl-YAML-Syck
    perl-YAML-Tiny
    perl-CGI

A short comment... why aren't these listed as required in the RPM... you should get a warning from the YUM install - instead you get nothing, which isn't particularly helpful...

    Then I executed:
    ln -s /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/Slim /usr/share/perl5/vendor_perl/Slim
(which I really don't understand why this hasn't been fixed yet....)

    Then:
    rpm -Uvh http://repos.slimdevices.com/yum/squ...1-6.noarch.rpm
yum install squeezeserver (which will instead install the new Logitech Name which I can never remember...)

After that you should be good to go... I just did it on this base F17 system and it worked...

Hope that helps... and at least I've documented this here for myself to make it easier if I ever need to install on another system.

    Thanks to you too! :-)

I had to reinstall my Linux, for reasons far too tedious to go into here, having forgotten about the pain of installing SBS. However, thanks to your instructions it was *relatively* painless. The only major difference was that I installed the 7.7.2-1 rpm directly, that I had already downloaded from the Logitech site. Curiously, I had to uninstall it and then re-install (after loading the various Perl dependencies) before it would work.

It'd still be better if Logitech could get the rpm corrected so that it took care of all of the dependencies etc. Hopefully, this will have been sorted by the time I have to do this again.

As a total aside, I have had some very good experience using Netatalk (http://netatalk.sourceforge.net/2.2/htmldocs/) to allow my MacBook to talk to my music share - this allows me to share the music files between my iTunes app on my MacBook and SBS on the server (which in turn serves my SB Duet). Prior to this, I wasted a lot of time trying to get Samba working - to no avail.
