A NAS that likes heat

Hi guys

I have Buffalo NAS HS-DH500GL upgraded to a 2TB disk, however anything above 25c deg heat causes it to shutdown! Does anybody know a cheap NAS that can cope with higher temperatures?

Forgot to mention, its just got to serve data. No special tricks, streaming, or other things.

25degC is not very hot at all. Where is that temperature taken from? the unit itself, the processor or the ambient air around it?

Internally it should be good for more like 50degC or higher. I would contact Buffalo and see what they say, you might be in line for a replacement for a faulty unit.

Is the fan ok ? How is the airflow around it ? Does it sit on top of anything else that is hot ? Or in direct sunlight ?
No tech enjoys being stuffed in a cramped cupboard with No ventilation or similar .

Otherwise Imthink a warranty call is due

It seems most NAS units have operating ranges of no higher than 35deg.

25deg ambient was just a guess, I'll have to get a thermometer and measure it! The buff has a very tiny fan and its in an enclosed space so I guess its struggling, its pretty old so is out of warranty unfortunately.

Netgear rates their 2-drive ReadyNAS models (ReadyNAS Duo v2, Ultra 2) at 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). However, you may want to look at the environmental specs of the hard drives as well... the NAS itself may be able to work under higher temperature conditions, but the drives inside it may not.

The buff has a very tiny fan and its in an enclosed space so I guess its struggling, its pretty old so is out of warranty unfortunately.

It's probably the combination that causes the issues:
- Enclosed space: Cooling doesn't work optimal.
- Old: Dust and other things that decrease the cooling ability has been collected inside it over time.
- Small fan: ...

If it's possible to open it and clean the fan, fan grills, heat sinks and other parts that might affect the cooling abilities that might be a solution, else getting a new NAS of any model will probably work if the ambient temperature is 25C unless it's placed in a very enclosed space. However, I would measure the temperature because if you are having ambient temperature of 30C or 35C it's going to be more important to look at the specifications when getting a new NAS model.

Dust can make a big difference for small devices like laptops and NAS boxes which don't have a lot of free open space inside.
