Hello,
As standard I have got NERO for ripping for my squeezebox touch. I use an external LG CD ROM drive.
All works fine except 3 CD's
(not that I have a big pile of CD's)
The Doors compilation the best of
The Doors Best Off 2 CD
Prince Sign O The Times
They are brand new CD's (latest unknown copy protection ?)
They play on my CD player and on Windows Media Player via the LG external CD ROM but no way I can rip them. I suppose there is somekind of protection ?
Any advise ? I have triend EAC aside NERO and others. The same " unknown error " occurs.
I think the CD's are built in with errors so you can not rip them.
What programm should I use to get them on my hard drive as FLAC or WAVE (loseless) ?
What about copying them as data CD and than copying the Data CD on my hard drive. Or the IT dpt. told me about an ISO image but what is that and which programm to use ?
Thanks for your assistance / help.
ps squeezebox touch linked to DAC

Do you have another disc drive that you could try? There are just sometimes cd's that won't rip on certain drives, for various reasons. I had one that came up just Monday that took me 3 drives to find one that would rip it. I have 2 on my desktop, 1 external, then 1 on my laptop that I use as my server, and if all else fails, my wife's laptop which has been really good for me at getting some of my hardest ones ripped (in an emergency maybe even her work laptop too). So if you're having troubles with a disc, most times it's the drive not necessarily the program. Sure if you're having audible errors some programs do a better job at error correction, but if it just won't read, try another drive. Maybe friends or family might have one you could try if you don't have a second one.

Historically I've found real drives in a real computer most reliable , laptop has never been any good for me for ripping.
But modern ones migth be better .
Edit: it is a good idea to try other drives sometimes the old cd/rw/dvdrw drive is better than my cd/DVD reader or the other wayLast edited by Mnyb; 2012-05-09 at 12:18.

See this wiki;

Sounds like cactus can be circumvented by disabling auto play or some masking tape gimmick.
On a side note I have 1 CD, Flim & the BB's - Tricycle, that won't rip on my laptop (Optiarc BC-5500-s drive), but I have no trouble ripping on my servers Pioneer 106D or Samsung SM-352-B.2 Duets - 1 for upstairs and 1 for downstairs
Rock Solid with SQ 7.6.1 and WHS 2011

Aha that old one , when I used XP I disabled auto play in the registry to many of these schemes install some ware that make trouble for you so that is a given , good of you to bring it up, I have forgot all about auto play :-/
That was one my pet peves with windows when I used it, why should things start to happen just because I insert a disc totally stupid ?
If you been unlucky enough to install it can cactus be removed or is it like the Sony's rootkit ?
( which I never got as disabled )
I use rubyripper on Linux nowadays .--------------------------------------------------------------------

Thing is I've got both of those cd's and not had any problems ripping them. I guess you're not in the US, maybe that's the difference. I've never run into copy-protection on a cd, so I guess I'm lucky. But I would try another drive before you give up, a lot of times that will do it.

Hello,
Autorun turned off. No way it works... Im located in Belgium Europe. Tried about 5 programs in total.
I will try on a different PC. Very curious if that will do the trick.
My guess id that I bought new CD s in the shop that were pressed around 2005 - 2006 as cactus has been abandonned since than. It s a real rip off... I'm angry at Warner
The idea was to put all my CD s on squeezebox, link it to a propper DAC to have the max sound quality.
Thanks again for all your help.

I've always gotten around copy protection, too... However, from what I understand, it only takes autorun to go once to have the software put on your computer. You may want to be make sure it isn't already there.
Only once do I remember having a hard time to the point that I had to try something "different"... I seem to recall using EAC in burst mode. You obviously lose the benefit of error detection, but if your disc is in good shape, you usually won't have problems anyway. I think I just gave the files a good listen afterwards to make sure I didn't have any errors.
Last, when all else fails, you might consider looking at torrent sites. I normally wouldn't suggest such a thing, but given you own the CD, this is one case where I'd say you have a legitimate reason to use such a method.
