LMS 7.7.2 on ReadyNAS NV+

Had my readynas NV+ for about 6 months. Upgraded the memory to 1Gb and fitted 4 x 2tb drives. I have around 70,000 music tracks of which 90% are FLAC. There are also plenty of video files and images on the NAS.

I initially tried to run whatever version of SBS came pre-loaded on the NAS but found it unuseable - far too slow. That was in line with many of the posts I'd seen so I gave it up as a bad job and stuck with the PC version just accessing files from the NAS.

A couple of weeks ago, though, out of interest, I upgraded the ReadyNAS to 7.7.2 and have been using it ever since. Yes, there is about 20 seconds delay when going to Music Library > Artists but to be honest I mainly use search anyway as the list of artists is quite long! All other actions work pretty much instantaneously as you would expect.

Runs the iPlayer plug in without any problems. I did try Lazy Search but that seems one step too far. The few m4a tracks I have are also transcoded without any problems.

The only downside I have found is the rescan time which can take up to 7 hours!! I get around this by leaving the NAS on overnight one night a week and setting an automatic rescan for just after midnight.

So, I just thought it worth publicising that as long as all you want to do is play your music then a ReadyNAS could well be up to the job, even for a relativeky large library.

Hey Andrew--

Hope you're still checking for replies to this. I appreciate your post. Right now a local retailer has a great deal on the Duo V2. I'm tired of leaving my computer on all the time, or having to run upstairs to boot it up (and wait) when I want to play music. My question is, can a moderately OK tech person (I've set up my own wireless network, printer, etc., not much more than that) like me get this thing up and running with my SBT and Duet, or am I asking for a weekend of serious frustration? Reading the threads in this forum, all the problems people have with Synology, Zyxel, WD MyBook Live, etc., it's a little daunting.

If anybody else, maybe somebody approximately with my skill set who has tried this wants to weigh in also, that would be great.

Hi Greg,

Not very tech-savvy here, but after buying a used Controller I managed to get my ReadyNAS updated and running 7.7.2 without too much headache. I run three Squeeze players off of it, although never in-tandem.

There's a pretty good forum on the Netgear (ReadyNAS maker) site, and their front-end software (RAIDiator) for the box itself actually helps with getting the LMS updated and running.

Like I said, not very technical here, so don't think I could give you a lot of help there, but so far as moral support, I say go for it!

Doing anything in LMS is slow, and update-scans take at least 30-40 mins. (for me), but if you're mostly just wanting to stream and listen to your own tunes, the ReadyNas experience should be satisfactory.

The ARM CPU in the v2 models is much better than the SPARC CPU in the original Duo/NV+ models. It still doesn't beat the Intel Atom CPUs in the Ultra/Pro/NVX models though.

If you already have all of your SB devices on your network and working, then adding the ReadyNAS should be cake. Once you've got the ReadyNAS all set up, log into it and make sure to remove any current versions of SqueezeCenter/Squeezebox Server/Logitech Media Server (I don't believe there will be any pre-installed on the v2 models, but don't know that for certain). Download the latest version of LMS from Logitech - www.mysqueezebox.com/download - and install that using the Add-Ons > Install/Update screen (I think I have that right; not at home so can't be certain).

After installing LMS through RAIDiator, copy your music to the Media share that is set up by default on the ReadyNAS. Once it's all copied, go through and set up LMS - http://ip.of.readynas:9000 - to look for your music and everything. Shut down LMS on your computer (don't uninstall it just yet, just to be safe for the moment). If your SB devices were all connected to your LMS, then they'll likely start looking for a new server and may auto-connect to your ReadyNAS when they find it. If they're connected to MySB, then when you select My Music, you can pick your ReadyNAS.

Hopefully everything has gone well and you're playing music from your ReadyNAS at this point!

Thanks Virgil! This looks like good advice. I did pick up a ReadyNAS last night (they can be had for $104 this week at Frys, after a $50 rebate, if anybody is interested). Now I'm waiting on a drive to come from Amazon (Caviar Green, 1 TB). The drives on Netgear's approved list are a little hard to find at a good price right now, and several of the ones listed are already disco'd models. Later, when prices come back to normal or if I see a good deal, I'll add a second one, and then I'll learn about this RAID business. I was thinking this morning I don't know RAID 0, RAID 1, 2 etc. from Raid that kills bugs dead.

By the time the drive gets here I'll likely be out of town, so I won't be working on this until 8/26 at the earliest, it looks like. When I do, I'll report in with any tips, tricks, problems encountered so that this thread can be helpful for somebody else, I hope.

Hello Virgil!

Yesterday I got the ReadyNAS connected up and running. Tonight I hope to install LMS and get the music playing. I do have a question about what the best way to copy all of my tunes (about 12,000 songs) to the ReadyNAS would be. When I copied all of them from my desktop, to external had drive, then to the XP laptop I am using as my music server right now, I used this program, as an executable run from a USB stick: http://download.cnet.com/FastCopy/30...-10905019.html

and it worked quickly and flawlessly, with verify enabled. Would this be a good way to copy to the ReadyNAS? I would assume that I could just map the ReadyNAS media share as drive Z (or whatever), then run FastCopy to copy all the files to it. Any advice?

Yes, that will work. (I'd connect my laptop/computer used in the transfer via ethernet when doing transfer...it will likely be much faster)

Thanks, Gary. I still have all the files on the external drive, and I figure I'll just plug that in via USB to the desktop I have RAIDiator or RAIDar or whatever it is installed on. I assume that will be just as fast, but even if it isn't, I don't mind letting it run all night.

I'll post an update as soon as I take this next step. I have some comments on how bad the ReadyNAS set-up instructions are, although maybe I should post them in a Netgear ReadyNAS forum.
