The settings may be part of LMS but the sync procedure has been changed and tweaked over the years and so there may be variations between players as players can vary (e.g. SB1 has a smaller buffer than SB3) . I think you should leave everything at the system installation default.
Enable the logging. it will give you a clearer idea about what is happening and what is triggering the "skips". Besides network issues. syncing relies on both LMS and players having accurate clocks and IIRC there were some users servers whose motherboards which had "poor" clocks (i.e. didn't keep good time) and this resulted in bad sync between players.

Which brings us nicely back to the request in my first post - I don't actually know what the default settings are.

It could well be this - it's an old-ish Dell, but I've beefed up the CPU (with a higher speed, but one that was listed as an OEM part for that motherboard) and upgraded the RAM

I recently had an odd synching problem as well (see the thread below). Never could resolve the problem, and it was only a problem when temporarily using LMS on about a 4 year old Dell laptop running WinXP. No issues with vortexbox appliance, newer dell laptop...
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showth...ight=skip+syncLocation 1: VortexBox Appliance 6TB (2.2) > LMS 7.7.2 > Transporter, Touch, Boom, Radio w/Battery (all ethernet)
Location 2: VBA 3TB (2.2) > LMS 7.7.2 > Touch > Benchmark DAC I, Boom, Radio w/Battery (all ethernet except Radio)
Office: Win7(64) > LMS 7.7.2 > SqueezePlay
Spares: VBA 4TB, SB3, Touch (3), Radio (3), CONTROLLER
Controllers: iPhone4S (iPeng), iPad2 (iPengHD & SqueezePad), CONTROLLER, or SqueezePlay 7.7 on Win7(64) laptop
Ripping (FLAC) - dbpoweramp, Tagging - mp3tag, Spotify

Thank you for your patience.... sorry for the delay in responding, my internet went down etc etc.
OK, so I have some logs. Pretty much as soon as I enable the 'Maintain Sync' option it starts to skip, but not with just enabling the sync of the players (source and power) - although in this scenario the audio goes out of sync.
Hopefully logs are attached called:
DoNotMaintainsync-NoSkipsButOutOfSync.txt
MaintainSyncOn-PlayersSkip.txt
I would appreciate your time in taking a look at them
Secondly hoe can I check if I have a 'bad clock' on the server? Any tools or utils that could help me?
Cheers

I haven't interpreted sync logs for a while but what sort of device is 00:04:20:1e:b1:e3 as it seems to be the one losing /gaining time causing the resync.

It must be the next step - otherwise you are stumbling around in the dark. Make sure you get decent logs of a couple of minutes as sometimes it can take time for sync process to settle down. After each change save and then clear the log and note what you did so that if you need to re-examine it you know the circumstances.
The logging gives some indication on what is happening. If you change any of the sync params you should redo the logging and look what is happening. You should be able to see whether things are getting better or not, even before a resync happens.
