New desktop what now ?

Hi I'm been solely on Linux for the last few years ( except work ) and been relatively happy with ubuntu up to 10.04 + Cairo docks which I have now . ( win XP drive died unnoticed in the background one day a couple ofmyears ago )

Now it's time to retire the old dual core P4 from 2005 :P I'm using ( it is coming to pieces mucho internal parts broken )

So I've ordered some newfangled stuff with i7 ssd 16gb memory etc and gtx680 , it will ship with win 7 of course .
So that I could play some games again ( it was years since I've done that ) and running the software you can't on Linux .

But for everyday use is till like a Linux distro ? But what ?

Ubuntu made thier OS to a cellphone with unity ? I have no problem with gnome 2.3 + Cairo docks I've never tried kde or xfce ? Does choice of desktop limit you choice of applications ?

What now Mint 12, Fedora 16 , Suse ? Aargh :-/

I'm using Cinamon with both Ubuntu and Fedora. It's seemed like a good solution to me: all the benefits of Gnome 3 minus the head-twisting-ness of an unfamiliar and counter intuitive new desktop regime. Everything ends up being right where I expect it to be. There may still be some compatibility issues with Cinamon and Ubuntu 12.04.

I ditched gnome/kde/etc long time ago in favor of xfce. Much less eye candy, stuff just works, and it's infinitely configurable. Download xubuntu live CD and see what it looks like.

Since you have many years of Linux experience you might be interested in Arch Linux (www.archlinux.org). It is not as hard to install as it may seem initially and once you get accustomed to the rolling release scheme you won't want to use another distro any-more. Small problems may arise here and there on updates, but big problems on mayor package upgrades are rare and can also be resolved in almost all cases without reinstalling, you usually run the same install for years! You do have to do manual setup on the command line here and there when installing new packages, but docs are usually available. The community is not as big as others, so you won't get always fast responses on the forums, but generally helpful. Ah, and the system is very customizable and can be kept very lean, no unneeded services or stuff you don't want like in Ubuntu for example.

Cinamon was a good desktop thankyou, solid advice.

Mint13 with Cinamon was installed works good

I only have some strang grub problems in that the installer won't find my win7 os and all attemps to fix it breakes the windows boot loader and make me reformat all my drives.
Luckily the bios on my new mobo have a boot facility where you can boot from different locations without changing options or reboot .

But in general happy with my new PC Mint13 recognised all hardware .

I'm in the process of imaging all my drives and create rescue disc so that I dare to experiment some more with the bootloader

That's the setup that allows me to successfully triple boot my Mac mini.

Yep I actually tried with EasyBCD but it was buggy it did not manage to create any boot menus at all ? , it did not show any entries at all in the basic meny but they showed in advanced.
It could however not save any functioning boot meny ? it just failed warning me that the machine wont boot

wonder if it understands UEFI or EFI boot whatever that is ? there is a special bootloader partition on my machine I think ?
Not my idea it is actually what my Win 7 home premium installer DVD did by default ?
Now I'm at the other end of the bell curve, my old pc was a heap of old junk this is the newest everything . I'll bet you can get issues either way :~

It begun with that the Mint installer did not see my win drive at all and thus never sugesting to install alongside windows .
And os-proper can not see the windows drive either .

I actually created a bug in Mint's bug tracker and gave them a bunch of files including a bootinfoscript output .
Well if the ambition to be THE desktop distro ,things like this must run smother
