Hi folks- My computer has been acting a little slow on certain things lately. Streaming videos, for one. I checked the broadband speed; it's good. So, then I go to the system monitor. No weird processes seem to be running, and yet as I check out CPU usage, I get this weird wavelike pattern where the CPUs max out every 5 seconds and then go back down.
I ran the command
$ top -n 10
and it identified squeezeserver as a big CPU hog. The system monitor wasn't picking it up, because the squeezeserver is not logged in as me, but rather as user "squeezeb"
I tested. Yep, running:
sudo service squeezeboxserver stop
knocks the CPU usage back down to usual, humming along at under 40%.
And
sudo service squeezeboxserver start
pops it back up to bouncing between 60 and 100%.
Any idea what is going on? Thanks!
John
Here's what I've got:
Ubuntu 10.10
3 GB memory, dual 2.8 ghz pentium processors
a 2 terabyte hard drive, about half full
Logitech Media Server Version: 7.7.2 - r33893
and the above runs three Squeezebox 3

Any 3rd party plugins installed? There's no way sbs ought to be eating those kinds of cpu cycles on that hardware if it's just idling.

No, it isn't scanning. I DID have some problems with the thing scanning to frequently, for whatever reason, but even when it isn't scanning, CPU usage stays the same. No music playing, no difference whether the units are on or off, either.
So, the squeezeserver is used for things like Pandora and Live Music Archive, right? I've just been turning off the squeezeserver to keep things running smoothly. I can still play music from my hard drive to the SB units. I don't use Pandora much, anyway.
It is odd, though. Now I see that in the output from
top -n 10
that even when I stop the process squeezeserver there is still something from that same user running (see attachment), but at least whatever it is doesn't seem to be taking much CPU power.Main System: Compaq Desktop/Ubuntu 10.04- Squeezbox Classic- California Audio Labs Gamma- Audible Illusions Modulus 3- PSE Studio II- Vandersteen 2ce
