Ok, I'll perform some more tests with removing tags later.
I didn't check other UIs in this virtual machine installation yet, but with the old SBS in my real environment it was the same on SqueezePlay, radio and touch. And as I've mentioned above, I've looked into the sqlite database and there was only a single album entry for the two album versions.

Sorry, I didn't mention it explicitly. To clarify: in the scan-for-changes scenario there were two albums with the same values in the title, titlesort and titlesearch fields and in the full-scan scenario there was a single album with the same values in these fields as before.

no luck
I made a few tests with removing the musicbrainz category tag and even modified the date tag to have different years and tried some combinations, but no luck. It's always the same. The full scan is merging the files from the two different album versions that are stored in different folders into a single album. But when I add the 2nd album version later and perform a scan for changes, then I get the two albums displayed correctly. And it's not a display issue, I checked the database.
I don't have any ideas what else to try (except of modifying the album titles, of course)...

sounds to me like you found a bug. full scan or scan for changes should first of all return the same results, no matter what. and the result should be, two albums based on two different folder locations.
so, that being the case, you should file a bug and try to get someone to reproduce your results.
