Is it possible to have two controllers associated with one receiver?
When I try it, I can pair a new controller but then the original one fails to connect to the server.

Per this thread it seems like it's an ad hoc setup, yes.
It is always better to use a wireless AP instead of running the Receiver as an "ad hoc AP". It will give you better security, better battery time on the Controller, better range, better reliability, and possibly also faster response.
And it will let you use as many Controllers as you want to control your Squeezebox.
So do buy an AP. They're not necessarily that expensive. If you want something very cheap and utterly reliable, I recommend a second-hand Linksys WRT54GL. It will also act like a router if need be.

Sorry if I was unclear - I don't have a wireless router - I'm connecting via the receiver.

Yes, I know. That's why I'm recommending that you buy one.

Another reason to get a wireless router.
IMHO, you should NEVER connect your computer directly to the internet at home. The router provides a second level of firewall protection which is always on and independent of bugs in the PC/MAC/... software.
Of course, you need to take the trouble to configure the router correctly.
The keys are:
a proper password for the router configuration page. (to prevent a malicious web page or app from reconfiguring your router).
turn off remote management (access to router management from the internet side) if for some reason your router has it on by default.
use wpa security with a decent password on the wireless.2 SB3, 1 Duet
Debian Squeeze server LMS 7.8.0
Netgear WNR2000V3 wireless network.
