flacs can be properly tagged, while wavs support only the most limited tags, and most apps not even that.

flacs use less space, and can be integrity checked.

with my music collection, i only use FLAC and mp3. i don't see a need to ever use anything else.
he has players in the household that can't use RG tags. However, someone has already pointed out how he can adjust the actual audio of FLAC files using the RG info with an option when converting within foobar2000. So he's set. (he never wanted to actually use wav files...I made that initial mistake in interpretation as well).

right on. for any niche cases where RG tags can't be used, i would either upgrade the hardware, or create a secondary duped collection to use just for that stuff.

the important thing to me, is that the "core" collection be not abused! abuse the dupes, not the originals.

I recall that's what he's doing. Some "mix tape" collections for his kids/wife I recall...

Sorry if I caused confusion. We are in full agreement. My main collection contains only Flac files, I don't even use mp3s. For kids and car we convert on the fly what we need to mp3.

Just to add another possibility. Have you looked into using a software like MediaMonkey? I use it as my media manager on my computer because when I need to use MP3 via a data-CD for my car, a personal media player (IPod) or even an audio-cd, it will automatically level files when transferred to the device or disc in question based on the tags on your original FLAC files. I'm not sure it allows use of album gain tags for this purpose (I don't use it enough), but it sounds like it may be good enough for your purposes. I also use it to maintain a db of my files outside of LMS (for ratings mostly) so that changes to ratings in LMS are not lost the next time I need to rebuild the LMS database.

It gives a lot of nice functionality in that respect, and you never need to actually store an MP3. Actually, the syncing for outside use is the only reason I keep that program.
