The simplest way to start is to make a custom browse menu that sorts by COMPOSER and then by ALBUM. The tedious part is tagging files to make the composer names consistent.

Yes, that's what I'd like to do. It's not a 100% solution but it's good enough. Is there a simpler way than the Erland plug-in procedure?

It sounds like you already have things tagged fairly well.

The custom browse setup is not difficult assuming you are sticking with standard tag fields anyway...

i.e. without much effort you could set up a browse by composer then album set up. The multi-library item is really only necessary if you are having trouble segregating classical from popular music. For instance, if your popular music has composer tags filled then you may need the multiple libraries to separate your music by genre.

However, if you have in fact kept composer fields to only classical music, you would only really need to set-up one menu item, and the plugin is fairly straight forward when it comes to that type of setup. There is a trial period available, and you may want to give it a try. Once you have things setup, you really won't need to mess with the settings again.

I don't understand the resistance from Logitech to adding browse modes such as Composers and Album Artists. Browse Composers requires little more than an added query or two and a menu item. Browse Album Artist would be the same. Neither of them would complicate the user interface, in fact they could potentially simplify or even eliminate the 'Composer, Band and Orchestra in Artists' preferences.

Couldn't agree more. Easy switching between A and AA would be great. Not to mention comps, so u should support that as well, ending the display code needlessly doing comp checks.

Probably heresy but as someone who has a rock/ambient/classical/folk/electronic mix of music then
composer = artist works for me.

Works for me too, then put the performer in the album name and a search will bring up all performances by that performer -

Another worthwhile task is to split major works into their own album, for example the Harnoncourt edition of the Beethoven symphonies comes on 5 CDs, so you make each symphony an album.

Erland, I licensed the custom browse plug-in and think I have it working. Only problem is, there are a few phantom composers showing up -- no songs or files attached. They were deleted at some point, but I can't get them out of the browse menu. I did a reboot and rescan. Any suggestions?
