Improving performance for "New Music" function

    Logitech Media Server Version: 7.7.1 - r33750

I upgrade from a previous version (mySQL based, to which I applied the suggested corrections to make the most out of RAM installed). Since then the New Music function (not the scan for new and changed music one) has been bringing the server to its knees. There are times when I need to wait 20-30 seconds before my Squeezeboxes become responsive again and I get the list of new albums.

    Any suggestion besides downgrading?

New Music works fine for me on 7.7.1. What is your LMS setting for number of items to count as new music, and how big is your total library? What are your server specs?

New music is a dog for me as well. After each scan the first visit to new music brings LMS to its knees.

    105,000 tracks
    8300 albums
200 albums for new music limit

    Quad Core i7
    8gb ram
    x64 Server 2008 R2 SP1
    7.7.2

A couple of things to determine:

    • Is it _only_ New Music, or is it any of the browse modes (Artists, Albums, Genres, Years, ...)? If you use New Music a lot, you may not realize whether the others behave the same.

    • Does it only happen _once_ after either starting or not having used the server for a long period of time? Many people have observed that with SQLite the first time they ask the server to perform a database intensive task, there's a long delay. In all likelihood this is the server reading a large portion of the database into memory.

If that is the case, setting the memory back to normal might fix the issue.

I've just set it back to normal, also set the statistics to off, doing a full clear and scan right now.

I'll check artists and then new music to see if it's a new music only issue.

I'll then add more music and kick off a new music scan and see what happens again.

Definitely not. The memory is not being used to do additional stuff.
There's no change in behaviour except that results would be kept in a
cache longer than with a smaller amount of memory.

Ok, after clear and scan with the new settings, everything comes up instantaneous. Drilling to an artist and new music, both very fast.

Now I've just copied some new music in and I'm doing a scan for changes and I'll see what happens.

His logic makes sense if the memory is used to cache the raw database in addition to being used to cache query results. Unless something is terribly wrong with the 'New Music' query, the result set should be rather small.

Just added 10 albums did a rescan and everything is still fast, comes up quite quick in the interface.

So it's either the memory setting or statistics. I should have only change one not the other. doh!

Or it's something that gets worst over time, and I need to add more music and do more scan for new and changed.
