Low volume out from 3.5mm headphone socket?

    Here's an interesting one....

I've recently bought a Controller having been won over by digital audio since buying a Touch back in September.

The controller is brand new. Being able to stream .flac files TO the Controller was a major selling point for me as I've got a couple amps and speakers set up around the place and work that I usually plug a iPod/BB phone/Discman (remember them !?) into for convenience. The fact it can controll the Touch is just an added bonus :-)

Anyway, has anyone else here found that the small internal speaker outputs music at the same time as outputting a signal via the 3.5mm jack socket? After about 1-2 mins the internal speaker disconnects and produces a healthy good quality analogue signal to the amp via a lead plugged into the 3.5mm socket. After its shut-off the internal speaker it'll play albums fine but until it does this the sound quality is reduced in both volume and quality. Odd.

I'm new to Controller ownership, is it me being daft or summat or is this a known bug? I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has discovered this 'phenomenon'...

The headphone out is in perpetual beta and cannot be fully trusted. Try resetting the Controller to factory defaults, and/or upgrade the firmware.

If the Headpheone Switch applet works with the Controller, that may also be worth a try. (I can't remember if it was originally designed for the Controller or the Radio, but i think it was the former...)

What is the volume of the controllers internal player ? if you are going to drive an external device with it's own volume just turn it up to 100%

Thanks for the replies and help Gents.

I'd never heard of the phrase 'perpetual beta' before, thanks for the link.

OK, the controller updated itself. On the whole things seem OK, there's a couple of quirks but nothing life threatening.

I'll have a go at the Headphone Switch Applet when I'm braver and more aware of what the Controller does and doesn't do.

Yep, I leave the volume set at 100% as it drives one of my homemade valve amps. Each amp has its own volume control so I've no need to use the internal volume control of the Controller.

Onwards to portable Audio nirvana ;-)

I installed the Headphone Applet. I was so brave... my Mum would be proud of me!

Thanks for the help Gents, Controller working a treat now.

And I never knew that applet existed!
That would have saved so much hassle with SSH!

    Other options

Another option to consider in case the controller playback doesn't continue to work in the long run is using iPeng on an iPhone or an iPod Touch. iPeng is a controller app that also can act as a player. The iPeng player is capable of playback of both FLAC and mp3 natively and does so gaplessly. If you have any andriod devices, there are options there too.

It's always good to have options :-).
