Hi all,
Really looking for some help with my current NAS setup.
I've been using my Buffalo Linkstation Live NAS with SBS installed via the IPKG method for a couple of years now without any problems. Then suddenly my SB cannot connect to the server ! I haven't changed my router or done anything that I can think of that has caused it to stop working.
As the IPKG can only run v7.3.3 I thought I may as well go ahead and use SSODS to install a newer SBS version.
Problem is I can't telnet into my NAS - all I get is the message "could not open connection to the host on port 23" - My router (linksys wag200g) has got port 23 forwarded and I've googled the hell out of this problem but to no avail....
Anyone got any idea what I can do to solve this, it's driving me crazy !!
Many Thanks,
Paul

Firewall on the PC you telnet from a 0.01% guess...
Likewise the NAS itself no setting to allow telnet somewhere in it's gui ?
Edit: is SSH an option you could maybe use putty....
Not the best advice possible but I count as "anyone" I hope--------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks for the advice.
PC firewall is deffo switched off + according to the router gui I've have port 23 enabled for the NAS address...
I don't know the first thing about SSH but I'm guessing it's an alternative way of communicating with the NAS other than using telnet??
Looks like I've got some reading to do..
Thanks again...

Can you confirm that the LinkStation responds to Buffalo NAS Navigator at the same IP address that you're trying to connect to with the SB?
Do you get any error messages at the command to install acp_commander.jar, as described in post #3 (Step 2) in this thread http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=62842?

Hi Tiredlegs..
Yes NAS Navigator can find my Linkstation at 192.168.1.130 without a problem and I can browse the folders on the Linkstation.
Don't get any error messages at that stage just the following"
"Didn't find <addons.tar> locally, looking at http://downloads.nas-central.org/Upl...SPro/Binaries/
untaring ...
Untaring complete, you can review the log in //192.168.1.130/share/acp_commander/untar.log
start telnetd...
Reset root pwd...
You can now telnet to your box as user 'root' providing no / an empty password.
C:\temp\LinkStationTelnet> telnet 192.168.1.130
Connecting To 192.168.1.130...Could not open connection to the host, on port 23:
Connect failed"
As I mentioned earlier port 23 is enabled as it has always been on the router...

On my own routers, I've never had to set Port Forwarding at all to be able to Telnet into my LinkStations. When you originally loaded IPKG Squeezecenter on your LinkStation, were you required to enable Port Forwarding for Telnet on Port 23 to get it to work (i.e. would it have worked without the Port Forwarding enabled)?
You've gone beyond my level of knowledge on this stuff. I suggest you post a question about it on the forums at NAS-Central, where the real Linkstation experts reside: http://forum.buffalo.nas-central.org/.

I really can't remember if I had to enable port forwarding or not originally as it was so long ago. I've tried disabling it again but no change.
I'll check out the buffalo forum and let you know if I succeed.
Cheers.
