    LMS windows service DOES NOT WORK!

    please see here:

    http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=17848

    basically, the LMS service doesn't exist, doesn't install, doesn't start. that SUCKS.

    i suspect this happens on almost all windows flavors. been an on and mostly OFF problem for a LONG time now.

    and i'm not alone, see here:

    I consider it a sideeffect since Microsoft tightend uo security in Vista; and since in Windows 7... the UAC debacle etc...

    And now I will quote myself from one of the threads you link to:

    "If you are on Vista or Windows 7 remember to start the Control Panel app as an administrator; right click on "Control Panel" in Start Menu and choose "Run as administrator"

    Otherwise it will not work, and no error message is shown."

    I have had no problem on various Vista or Windows 7 PC's
    Main: Receiver (Audiocom) -> Beresford Caiman+ (Gatorized) -> Carver A-500x -> B&W 704
    Office: Receiver -> Luxman L-210 -> Stax SR84 Pro
    -> Beresford Caiman (Gatorized) -> Superlux HD668B
    Server: A8-5500, 4 GB, SSD+ 2*1 TB, Win8 w. SBS 7.8 (SQLite w. High Mem)
    Tied together by D-Link DIR-655 + DGS-1008D

    thanks slate, i found this as well:

    http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91385

    however, that does not explain:

    1. how anyone is supposed to know that?
    2. the bad behavior of the apply button

    and so i think something need to be done so as to not needlessly and pointless
    frustrate users going forward!

    i mean, seriously, its in the slimtray control panel, which is meant for dummies, but its not explained and therefore does not work UNLESS you know the secret handshake! BAD DESIGN.

    This has been reported and reported and reported.

    This thread contains the fix and some details of the behavior:
    http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=87819

    Another thread for reference:

    Its actually really simple for Logitech to fix.
    I believe under Windows Vista, Microsoft had set up a compatibility shim for Squeezebox server so it always just ran as admin. Microsoft has since removed their fix for SBS in Windows 7 or the SBS version now exceeds what the shim was created to support. Logitech must now make SBS/LMS correctly request admin rights when required.

    Unfortunately that can't be the answer to my problem because I am running XP service pack 3.

    dave, did you run slimtray as admin? b/c in my exp, that does allow you to then get LMS to run as a service.

    Gah! I knew I should have baby sat this bug more.

    That fix is horrible and isnt a fix.

    I have suggested a correct fix to the problem in the existing bug.

    Agreed, it's not a fix.

    > I have suggested a correct fix to the problem in the existing bug.

    How does that solve the issue that Windows 7 wouldn't ask for elevated
    permissions? What you suggest behaves exactly the same on my machine as
    what we already had before: if the user isn't part of the administrator's
    group, the execution fails.

    I'll be happy to implement a real fix if somebody can find one. But
    according to MS this isn't possible in all cases any longer. See the link
    in the bug report.

    well, is it not better than the nothing that was before? what bothered me the most is that a solution or workaround existed, but there were no clues to find it! at least now someone will have a clue...
