Unhappy Multiple LMS processes on Ubuntu

This seems to be a general problem. I am not keen on "breaking" my entire setup, so any advice is welcome.

    [11-12-14 19:30:59.1395] main::init (354) Starting Logitech Media Server (v7.7.1, r33735, Mon Nov 28 15:45:08 PST 2011) perl 5.010001
[11-12-14 19:30:59.3365] Slim::Networking::UDP::init (39) FATAL: There is already another copy of the Logitech Media Server running on this machine. (Address already in use)
[11-12-14 19:30:59.3370] Log::Log4perl::Logger::and_die (868) Warning: FATAL: There is already another copy of the Logitech Media Server running on this machine. (Address already in use) at /usr/share/squeezeboxserver/lib/Log/Log4perl/Logger.pm line 900

Tried the remove & purge, but it also does not work. Any suggestions?

I can not help but i have the exact same problem and tried the same things.

When I run the top command i get this:

    Tasks: 135 total, 2 running, 133 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
    Cpu(s): 15.6%us, 1.0%sy, 0.0%ni, 82.7%id, 0.6%wa, 0.1%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st
    Mem: 1543504k total, 477460k used, 1066044k free, 56544k buffers
    Swap: 4522256k total, 0k used, 4522256k free, 180044k cached

PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
    7168 squeezeb 20 0 22552 19m 2680 R 53 1.3 0:01.60 squeezeboxserve
    949 squeezeb 20 0 110m 96m 5724 S 1 6.4 0:57.88 squeezeboxserve

    900 squeezeb 20 0 3040 1440 1136 S 0 0.1 0:03.00 squeezeboxserve

Note the CPU load for process 7168. New processes keeps starting and often the CPU for a process is 100% even though the overall CPU is 85% idle.

And yeah.... the squeeze log is full of these:

    [11-12-16 22:49:32.5386] main::init (354) Starting Logitech Media Server (v7.7.1, r33735, Mon Nov 28 15:45:08 PST 2011) perl 5.010001

2011-12-16 22:49:34 Logitech Media Server died. Restarting.

My squeezebox server, how ever, still works.

I had 2 Servers running also, one was started with the squeezebox initscript, the other with LMS initscript.
That is some kind of leftover from the update with the name change to LMS. As there were still both packages installed Squeezebox and LMS.
I decided for me to be save: purge both and do a fresh install.

Does anybody know whether there's already a bug report for this issue?

I had this problem as well and couldn't get rid of it. Thanks for the advice above. I had to reboot because the purge did not complete due to the user squeezeboxserver (?) still being logged in. I also found that I had remnants of squeezecenter installed and did a sudo apt-get purge squeezecenter to get rid of them. Then I reinstalled and it now seems to be okay.

I have the same problem with lms 7.7.1 (before 7.7.0 and 7.7.1 beta) on a WD Live MyBook NAS. As my unix knowledge is quite basic, i wonder: What is "sudo apt-get purge squeezecenter"? Just type the command in a ssh-terminal? And will i loose all my settings (my wife and daugther would not like that)? I also found that lms will not identify any of my artists after i deleted and rebuilt the library.

I also get this problem. Any solutions?

The purge command doesn't work for me. I get an error:

    Removing squeezeboxserver ...
Purging configuration files for squeezeboxserver ...
    Removing user `squeezeboxserver' ...
Warning: group `nogroup' has no more members.
userdel: user squeezeboxserver is currently logged in
/usr/sbin/deluser: `/usr/sbin/userdel squeezeboxserver' returned error code 8. Exiting.
    dpkg: error processing squeezeboxserver (--purge):
subprocess installed post-removal script returned error exit status 1
    Errors were encountered while processing:
    squeezeboxserver
    E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

Would a complete uninstall and reinstall lose all of my settings?

    Any advice appreciated.

So OK: LMS is not the same package as SBS and the "upgrade" may or may not be aware of the older package.

You need to uninstall SBS and save the preferences and settings in the server.prefs if you like. Then install LMS. Linux has at least a couple of package managers so it's not surprising that installing LMS didn't play well with them. (Think APT, YUM, RPM.)

Most of the "settings" are actually browser cookies unless you changed things like SuperDateTime.

On that box you don't need sudo you log in as root with ssh sudo is a way to get higher privileges for a user ( via a password dialog ) .

Apt is short for aptitude this is a software packet manager that's runs in debian based Linux similar to add and remove program in windows but better it works in command line and via desktop guy tools .

Such tools does not only install programs simply, they keep track of it's files and also manage updates.
The purge comand tells aptitude to go and find all files and directories installed by that package and delete them including files created by the program in it's settings folders ( who also get deleted ).

Full scale desktop Linux is quite easy to manage these days, juggling a small embedded system like the WD my book can be harder it have no fat, all " unecessary " things are removed to make the OS smaller
and lighter, it can be even smaller look inside the Touch or Radio .

Rpm or yum is other popular Linux software packet managers .

The WD OS does it have something similar, how did you install LMS in the first place ?
