How to turn off SB touch without losing connection to local server

Hi,

I have a Squeezebox Touch working stand-alone with a self-powered usb HD.
From time to time when I turn it off, it loses its connection with the local server and I have to restart the SB server and rescan everything again.
Am I doing anything wrong? Is there a right way to turn it off?

Well, it depends on what you mean by "off"?

If just using the off button (IR remote or touch screen) this is really just a Standby, not really "off". Nor should this cause the Touch's server to stop.

But if you are actually removing power for the Touch then yes this will cause the Touch server to need to reboot at power on and then must rescan the entire HD.

Another issue might be if your HD goes to sleep due to inactivity. This may cause the Touch's server to think it is a new HD requiring a rescan.

Is your HD going to sleep? Are there any drive utilities on that HD that may be causing this?

I ment "standby" when said "off". I just want to stop the music and come back later. Sometimes the server is disconnected.

Perhaps is the sleep mode on the HD...but isnt it good to let the HD rest when not in use?

Im using a seagate expansion portable drive 500Gb connected through an powered usb hub. But I didnt erase those apps that came in the HD.

How do I disable the sleep mode? On the Touch or on the HD?

It would be on the HD itself within it's own utilities. You would have to connect the HD to your computer to access such utilities, if present.

Example: On my computer HD's I never use "sleep" or "hibernate". I simply use the setting to stop the drive spinning after 10 minutes of no activity.
I'm guessing (hoping) your HD utilities offer something similar. May have to ask that question in a forum for Seagate HD's.

Also make sure that USB hub is not turning off. If it is then that is the same as disconnecting the HD itself, resulting in a complete rescan.

Also Erland has has written a patch/applet which can be installed directly onto the Touch to force it to not scan. How this works, what is required, etc... I have no idea.
But might be worth some reading to possibly stop the Touch rescanning your HD.

The performance was pretty bad when I tried it, so don't expect too much from this.

Its perfectly fine to have a drive spin down as long as the USB connection stays intact. Some drives let you make that distiction and some do not. If yours does not then you probably want to turn off sleep altogether.

There are actually two different types of scans that happen, one is the quick scan that happens at all disk connections, and the other is the full in depth scan. The quick scan is just to find out if you have added any new files to your disk, it is just looking at file names and dates, its not actually reading the files. This should be pretty fast, usually only a couple minutes at most. If it doesn't find any new files then it won't do the in depth scan. Even if it finds a few new files it will only "deep scan" those new files.

If the scan is always taking a long time, that usually means that a full scan has never finished, this will cause a deep scan of every file every time a disk is connected. If this is happening then its a good idea to get this corrected as well.

Erland: I really dont intend to install the applet, but I will check the settings of the HD.

John: what apparently happens is that the HD goes to sleep and loses the connection.
The scan is not too long. The boring part is to have to do it all the time.
