"Stranglehold" - Ted Nugent from Live Gonzo. I'm not really a Ted Nugent fan, but this is a track played live will make anybody pull out their air guitar.

Another one in the 70's vein - "Do you feel like we do?" from Frampton Comes Alive. Again, not a big Frampton fan, but this one is great.

My favorite would probably be Dazed and Confused from the How the West Was Won album by Led Zeppelin (that whole set is pretty good).

I also love Pearl Jam's rendition of 25 minutes to go from the Benaroya Hall concert

And almost everything from Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison recording is grand.

I can see that but so many tracks are not Van vocals.

Yeah. Almost more like a revue than a traditional concert.

Ex the overplayed "Free Bird", Lynyrd Skynyrd's "One More From the Road" is an amazing live album. From the usual live errors to some amazingly inspired guitar work, it really is the full package. One example of both is the opening bars of "Gimme Three Steps", you can hear Van Zant's lead guitar "pulling" the drummer up to the right tempo.

My other favourite live record is Bob Seger's "Live Bullett", recorded just before the Stranger in Town and Night Moves disks catapulted him to the wider limelight. A Midwest journeyman hero at the time, you could tell he was at times tired, but picked such awesome material and the power comes through. Rock solid band as well.

IMO, a great live album captures the artist at their peak, with excellent technology preserving the dynamics of the original performance. While I admire the passion in early live albums by the Who and Stones, the equipment of the day wasn't quite there. Today, the equipment can capture the moment, but the Stones are past their peak. Tough combo in the old days to get right. That being said, some of my favourite live recordings are from the 60's when jazz musicians are captured in small clubs. Oscar Peterson, Live at the Bluenote comes to mind. But easier to capture two vocals and a trio than a rock band with 10 or more instruments and four or more vocal tracks pushing 100,000 watts of power.

Archive : Live at the Zenith.

A good introduction to the band & a great live performance for anyone who likes (modern) prog-rock / trip-hop / whichever other genre they don't quite fit into !
