Then I run it through genpuid to add the analysis tags. This always used to work fine. But now when I try it, although I have the archive option set with genpuid, when I used picard to look for the analysis tags (whichever were appropriate for flac), they aren't there. I experimented a little and found that if I use a different program to erase all the tags (or don't use picard in the first place) then genpuid writes the tags correctly. However, if I then use picard to edit the tags, it gets rid of the tags genpuid created. Strange.

I also noticed that the tags are actually still there, but they don't show up when I look for them in picard, and they aren't picked up when I scan them in to the musicmagic server. I know they are there, though, because if I use puddletag and look at extended tags I see them. Even stranger.

So, my genpuid problem is solved, but now I need to figure out this picard problem to finally get the process that I was using for tagging and analyzing back.
Interesting, I have the same workflow (genpuid, then picard--although I have replaygain tags added in between). It never even occurred to me to look at the tags in picard but you're right, it doesn't show them. However, my suspicion is that it's just a picard display issue--maybe it's only showing tag fields it "knows" about? The reason I think that is that within Picard none of the replaygain tags show up either. But they are there because when I look at the tags in any other app (kid3 and Tag on OS X) they are there.

It's troubling that you say MusicMagic server doesn't recognize them. Unfortunately I'm not that far along yet in my project (I'm trying to get my entire FLAC library ready before setting back up Squeezeserver, MusicIP, Sugarcube etc.). I'm just about done but still have a few more albums to go. This would not be a good time to find out that Picard has screwed up my MusicIP tagging!! Ironically, the only reason I run genpuid first is because in the past MusicIP had a bug where it garbled tags when archiving analysis, although I think that was just id3 tags and I think it was fixed in one of the later versions anyway.

What I do know is when looking in an external tag editor, all of the MusicIP-added tags look identical before and then after tagging with Picard. So if Picard is screwing with those tags I don't really understand how.

Maybe other users can chime in here with their experience with genpuid/musicip and tagging with picard. Meanwhile I will try to get my squeezebox/musicip server up and running so I can test this.

I've used those steps for quite a while, and it always worked fine, so I'm not sure what the issue is. I tend to agree that this seems like a picard problem more than a mm server problem. It seems to be the case that even the tags from older files that mm server recognizes can't be seen by picard. So this problem could be related to the fact that all these files were originally tagged when everything was having problems (even though I ran genpuid again after it started working correctly and the new tags were correctly added). Now that genpuid seems to be working, I'll try adding some entirely new flac songs to my library using this picard->genpuid->mm server procedure and I'll let you know how it works.

musicbrainz discontinued the use of musicip/dns, maybe that is the reason picard has some issues with it.

    Cool Servers are up

    Hi guys,

I got the heads-up that the MusicIP servers are backup again and indeed they are and seriously quicker than they were a few months ago. Analyse away!!

Analyzing works very good at the moment. Maybe a bit offtopic but i noticed that my collection has a lot of songs which are analyzed but don't have a PUID according MIP Mixer gui on Windows xp.
What is the reason for that? I have set the archiving option.

Edit: Nevermind, spoke too soon. It seemed to be analyzing a ton of albums but in the end it was only about 10/300--the rest all downloaded their analysis tag from the server properly. Sorry if I worried anyone.

    Cool Genpuid not producing PUID's.....

This is a copy of a note left on the Spicefly forum as
this forum is for sure much more active.
I am a long time happy user of Sugarcube and am a bit worried for the future.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Greetings,

First a few words about my setup on Win7 64 Pro.
In the past years I've been happily ripping and tagging CD's to FLAC using EAC.
Each track to one FLAC file and a separate folder for each album.
The musicip "magic numbers" where than generated using the command line genpuid in batch mode.
This resulted into the following FLAC musicip tags being populated :

    ANALYSIS, FINGERPRINT, MUSICIP_DATA and musicip_puid.

The process was not speedy, one album was done in 5 to 10 minutes or so.
Sometimes musicip_puid's were missed, but running genpuid a couple more times fixed the issue.

Ripping a few new and old albums I noticed that things were breaking down since last year.
The process became slower and more and more musicip_puid were missing.
A recent album ripped today did only get 2 musicip_id's out of 22 tracks ( double album ).
The other magic numbers are still generated.
If I rerun genpuid on the recent double album, it exits after a few seconds and the log file
    just reads :

    Tue Jan 10 11:05:24 2012
    ** Stopping Processing

and no new musicip_puid's are generated.

So here are my basic questions :

    1. Does sugarcube ( or musicip mixer process ) need that musicip_puid number to generate the mix.
If no , ignore subsequent question , I am fine with the missing musicip_puid's.

    2. If yes, what alternatives exist to generate those nice mixes and/or get
    the musicip_puid populated again.

Thanks in advance for any insight or clarifications.

    Francis

PUIDs are completely irrelevant to MIP's analysis and Mixing capabilities.
Linux finally gets a great audio tagger: puddletag - now packaged in most Linux distributions.

Yep the only thing the puid tag indicates is that genpuid/mipmixer was able to match the fingerprint for that track to the server and thus downloaded the analysis tag. To put it another way, if the puid tag is missing then it means that your computer calculated the analysis tag locally for that file--which is no problem--it just makes the process take longer.

I'm not sure how recent that person's experience is but the MIP servers as of last weekend (last time I ran a genpuid) are still working fine (after having some severe problems the last few months of 2011).

    Thumbs up Puid

Thanks to both for clarifying, I will ignore PUID's altogether since I
do not need tem for tagging ( EAC is doing a fine job at this ).
Just tried genpuid today and it still returns after about 5 seconds with the same 2 PUID's out of 42.
