    >What is your favorite first or debut album by a band.
    >

    A few come to mind:

    Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
    Portishead - Dummy
    Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes
    Blackfield - Blackfield

    Best Debut Album

    >Sheryl Crow - Tuesday Night Music Club. Great songs, great backing
    >band, great production. Who knew that "Texas" rhymes with "suspected"?

That wasn't actually her debut album. There was an album produced before that, self-titled, that was so poor it was scrapped by the record label.

Both great calls but on the subject of difficult second albums, wasn't Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie a stinker of the highest order? :-)

That should be a new thread: Worst follow up to best debut album. Counting Crows might be in the running.

Good choices. Here are a few that so far haven't made the list:

Lou Reed - Lou Reed (not really is his debut but the first under his own name)
The Velvet Underground and Nico - self titled
Elvis Costello - My Aim Is True
    Graham Parker - Howlin' Wind
    The Move - The Move
    Barenaked Ladies - Gordon
    Love - Love
Nils Lofgren - Nils (as with Lou Reed, not really his debut but the first album recorded under his own name.)

    And now for some jazz:

David Murray - Flowers For Albert
The Vandermark 5 - Single Piece Flow
    Herbie Hancock - Takin' Off
    Weather Report - Weather Report
Return to Forever - Light as a Feather
