[announce] SlimNAS8Pro: a Squeezebox Server for FreeNAS 8

FreeNAS 8.0.1 RC1 was announced last week, and I decided to put together an experimental distribution of Squeezebox Server which would run on it. I know there are similar packages available already, so I did something slightly different. This is it: SlimNAS8Pro beta1.

Summary: this is a distribution of SBS for FreeNAS 8.0.1 RC1. It requires a 64-bit processor and ZFS (with enough memory to use it). Some hackery of your FreeNAS is needed before installing it right now, because of an omission in the FreeNAS RC.

Unlike Michael's SlimNAS, it doesn't integrate with the FreeNAS third-party add-on system, because there isn't one any more. A new system is planned for 8.1.

    Details at:

    http://www.xenopsyche.com/ip/SlimNAS8Pro

I hope I've managed to explain the steps necessary to get this thing working in sufficient detail. It's really a corner case, a collision of two obsessions, SBS and ZFS, so I don't expect it to be terribly popular.

A big thank-you to the people who tested the alpha versions!

    Thanks and some findings

First of all, many thanks for your work.

I have been testing it with some versions of Freenas 8.0.1 and have found the following:

    1. Perl is not available in 8.0.1 RELEASE and it will never be in any final release of FreeNAS. It was fully functional in some night builds, but it was not intentional. Also, it will be available on debug builds. So, no perl in FreeNAS for sure, just in case you want to update your page with this information.

    2. The Extras menu cannot be found or added in any way (even with Settings->Home Menu) using a Controller from a Duet. It is displayed using the browser interface, but not in the Controller. This is really annoying and I have not been able to figure how to show it. Any help would be very appreciated.

    Best regards.

    Error using SlimNAS8Pro

I successfully installed this on a Freenas 0.8 system running in the HP micro server.
The Squeezeserver scans the files properly, creates the albums, artists, erc.

When I try to play a track, I get an error, however. It says track cannot be played. This is into a Squeezebox Touch. I have a separate vortexbox server, which plays fine into the touch.

    Any suggestions?

It looks like the problem is restricted to playing Apple Lossless (.m4a) files, since
flac files play back fine. It may be related to a general bug in Squeeze center. I tried to install
lame, but could not get that to work. Possibly installing mplayer or faad might do the trick.
    Will update soon...

    Hi,

Thanks for your effort to build this kit for squeezebox! I was wondering if you can explain how to build the perl modules required for LMS 7.7.2

I found a "buildme.sh" within the perl-5.12.4_1-i386 archive, running that file (after installing "pkg_add -r binutils") results in some errors that cc can't be found.
when i type cc at the freenas prompt I get another prompt "CORRECT>wc (y|n|e|a)?" does this mean cc is correctly installed and it's just a $PATH issue?

    regards,
    Willem.
