Ubuntu has moved from perl 5.10 to 5.12.

Squeezebox server requires binary modules for some of its libraries which are specific to the perl release. The distributions of 7.5 and 7.6 do not include these for the newer perl on Ubuntu. They are however included in the 7.7 beta release.

This is the main reason why Ubuntu 11.10 will run 7.7 and not previous releases. For the moment the easiest way to get SBS running is to upgrade to a 7.7 beta.

    That's useful to know, Thanks.

I'm now going for a different temporary solution, I've just installed Squeezeboxserver on my Windows XP Laptop, and set the music folder to the folder on my Ubuntu server. It seems to work (but I'm still doing a scan). I think I might wait for the stable release of 7.7 before I install on my Ubuntu box again.

    Edit:
One slight doubt however about this explanation. When I first upgraded to Ubuntu 11.10, my older version of Squeezeboxserver was still working OK. It was only when I also upgraded Squeezeboxserver, that my setup failed.

Confirmed. Changing sources.list to look at "unstable", and installing logitechmediaserver, works.

    That is good news,
but I think I'll wait for the stable version,
and in the mean time just use my XP laptop as a temporary server.

    So unstable :

    deb http://debian.slimdevices.com stable main
    deb http://debian.slimdevices.com testing main
    deb http://debian.slimdevices.com unstable main

Interesting, in the wiki it says "Servers listed first in sources.list have higher priority."

So since the app's been renamed to logitechmediaserver (which doesn't currently exist in testing or stable), once it does come to testing (and stable) Ubuntu should auto-install the more stable version as it moves through the branches.

I'm wondering whether those instructions are out of date.
My system doesn't seem to be able to access the software repository any more, (http://debian.slimdevices.com stable main), so I was wondering whether it is no longer available, or if perhaps the name had changed. I did a bit of searching and found these instructions suggesting that you have to download the file and install it.

    http://logitech-en-amr.custhelp.com/...tware%20ubuntu

The only version available on the download page was 7.6.1. When I downloaded the file and double clicked on it, it opened up the ubuntu software centre, which then installed it.

Only trouble is it doesn't seem to work, but as other people have said above, we now need the newer version called Media Server which is currently only a Beta version. I wonder how long it will be before a stable version of the new software is available.

    Richard.

    Additional information:
Using the command "top" I can see that the service is running, however I can't seem to get any access to it. Entering "127.0.0.1:9000" into my browser as instructed, I just get
Oops! Google Chrome could not connect to 127.0.0.1:9000
    This is not good :-(

I give up. I think I'm going to backup my system and then reinstall the OS from scratch.

I decided to try installing a beta version of Logitec mediaserver, and I still have the same issue. The server seems to be running but I can not get any response from it either from my web browser or from my Squeezeboxes. What is more worrying is that my MythTV has the same issue, so I think I must have some fundamental problem with my system. Grrrr.....

How to download the 7.7 nightly build

I noticed someone had asked where they can download the nightly build, since Logitech no longer offers that option on their web site.
    Here it is:
    http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=7.7

For Ubuntu, just download the Debian Installer package.

debian package on ubuntu 11.10 failed through GUI

    Hi,

I tried the v7.7 all.deb package through the packet manager (synaptic), and it failed telling that something wrong in the .deb file.

I downloaded it from http, then installed it with the commande line 'dpkg -i [file].deb ' and it works fine.

    Just to inform.
Steel available for test (I'm in a testing environment, so I could break my current install)

    Same to me.

Unfortunately I have to do the following step, too:
