Cool Squeezebox Server has deleted my whole music collection!

I installed the 7.6.1 nightly SBS for Windows XP. My music is on a NAS share as M:. I told it to rescan, but when I look at my albums, none are there! Should I use the official Logitech forum?

It's slow, and SBS web GUI isn't telling me it's still doing an initial scan, it just comes up empty.

Shut it down, clear everything in the cache, restart.

Is there some reason you're using a mapped drive instead of a UNC path?

You'll definitely get better performance using local storage rather than reaching across the network.

Sorry. My dysgraphia (broken cerebral hardware) is at its worst late at night, and my posts tend to be unfathomably cryptic. I should know better after more than 20 years on Usenet, but I still get these little bursts of enthusiasm...

My point was that, in Windows Idiot Mode, without any indication that SBS is still rescanning my collection, and assuming I don't know (or care?) how to look at the scanner progress, it's quite likely that I'm going to yell and scream about "empty collections".

I have no intention of using Windows for anything other than a test. Once the scan is done (70% in 17 hours right now) I'll reboot the same box with some other OS. There are a few other SBS users here at work (University IT Dept) and I've been asked which is the best set up for running SBS on a SFF PC + NAS combo.

As for UNC... well, when it comes to Windows, I'm happily ignorant.

Did you get enough sleep? Because I didn't understand the point of any of the rest of that post.

    Good luck.

I'm curious, is there any definitive word or info available on using UNC over mapped in SBS?

    'How to' or 'why to'?

    Why to:

Mapped drives will work ok if you're running Squeezebox Server at user login. But UNC paths work also and won't break if the drive letter is later changed and won't break if you later want to run SBS as a service.

UNC paths are preferred (usually required) when running SBS as a Windows service. It's difficult to map a drive letter for use by Windows services.

"over" meaning "vs" or "instead of", so "why to".

You asked the OP about why one would use mapped drives. My reason - I already have my music app's playlists, smartlists, and view rules and filters configured to use my music's mapped drive, so I'd have to change those. Its a bit of work to change them all, but really no big deal.

I was hoping for more info on the issue of why SBS has trouble seeing mapped drives initially after installation, but so far no word.

Perhaps SbS starts before windows has completed the drive mapping.

Unfortunately this isn't the issue. The drive is already mapped, session logged in, and other software is actively using it.

It is only SBS that is having trouble thinking the mapped drive is not valid for some reason. But only for a short while after installation.

Ignore it and move on then. I'm used to it. NHF.
