Now almost 4 hours later it appears to be finished, but it is not showing the "scanning complete" message. The MusicIP import finished about a half an hour ago and the status screen is just sitting there. Scanner.exe is still showing activity on the server. Waiting, waiting, waiting...

I'm really afraid to abort and be back to square one again.

Keep in mind that in 7.6 (with SQLite) the server and library are completely usable during a full clear & rescan, unlike in past.
How? When I browse artists, albums, etc. they are all blank.

When doing a full clear & rescan, 7.6 now builds a whole new library database on the side, while keeping the current one in place. After the scan is finished the new one is swapped in.

    Try disabling the MusicIP plugin.

If that's not it, disable all plugins, run a full scan, then gradually add the plugins back in until you figure out which is trashing things.

7.6 scanning playlists is soooo slow

What do you mean by that?

I never had a problem with pre-7.6 (MySQL) - what problems were there in the past?

Do you mean that browsing was slow when scanning, or playing would stutter due to rebuffering.

Or perhaps because the scanner was modifying the same DB content as the browsing/playback, that this caused problems?

In 7.6, I think the scanner (internal+external?) scan to a new db, and then overwrites the db when when the scan is complete. Similar issues could occur if browsing just as the scanner overwrites the DB?

Yes, you now have to wait for the first scan to fully finish before any music can be played.

I don't know what would happen if you tried to browse music folder whilst a scan is in progress - does this create content in the current DB that is then overwritten when the scan finishes? Or perhaps browse music folder is disabled when there is a scan in progress.

This often means that the scanner crashed and didn't report any error. If you are using Windows, check the event viewer to see if the scanner process crashed?

Could it be that CustomScan or Lazy Search is hooking into a new scanner event to process before it reports scan complete (in the past these would kick in after SBS scan completes).

True, but only during the initial scan. After you have a populated library it's usable while a full scan is in progress.

Custom Scan still uses the "rescan done" event and I think that's still generated after the standard scanning is finished, have you seen it being generated too early ?

I only have the default plug-ins at the moment. InstalledPlugins and DownloadedPlugins folders are both empty. I was waiting to finish a scan before adding plugins back. But, goodness, I sure didn't expect it to be a multi-day ordeal!

Scanner.exe is is still in the task list, there is no crash shown in event viewer, and these two files continue to increase in size:
    squeezebox-persistent.db (15,456 KB and growing)
    squeezebox-scanner.db (259,639 KB and growing)

squeezebox.db went from 89 KB to 111 KB and hasn't changed for an hour.

    Ideas?

Disable the included plugins as well. MusicIP has been problematic in 7.6.

You might want to point the server at some subset of your music library until you get this sorted out. Better yet, I recommend creating a small test library by copying about 100 albums to a new folder. Pick some compilations, some artists with one album, some artists with more than one album, albums from different genre, some multi-disc sets, a few albums with non-ASCII characters in the artist, album, or song name. Shouldn't take more than five minutes to create such a test library.
