    Faulty power adapter

    Hi,

Whenever I move my Squeezebox Classic to clean it, it shuts off and turns back on again. I've moved the jack that connects to the back of the unit, and determined that the wire must be cracked inside the adapter. Is there any way to fix this by soldering a new jack, or would it be better to just get a new adapter?

The Touch power adapter works fine with the SB3. I just bought one from Logitech for around $30 total. From what I understand, the Touch power supply is a much better power supply than the one originally supplied with the SB3. If you don't mind spending the $30, I would just replace the power supply.

Or, I have a SB3 power supply I could sell you at a good price.

Cisco ATA power adaptors are a spot on match and are much much better quality...

So you're absolutely sure that the crack isn't located inside the SB itself? After having a look at a similar case with an SB Classic, I'm pretty convinced that, at least in my case, the crack is in the solder joint that connects the power inlet to the PCB. Also, in general this seems like a more plausible failure mode to me. (I'm going to try to remember to open and fix it this weekend.)

I have the very same problem with my SB3. My solution was to never move it whilst powered (and eventually replacing it with a spare unit).

Same here. My first SB3 (originally bought in the US) had that problem. Logitech Germany gave me an exchange psu and everything went well.
After years I got another now called classic with the same issue on ebay, and was lucky enough that Logitech changed the whole system- for warranty reasons.

Anyhow, I think it's not a faulty SB or a faulty psu- I think it's just the plug.

You're right, I'm almost 100% positive that it's the plug. Even when I move the adapter cord around, the SB still stays on. Only when I jiggle the jack a bit inside the plug, that it shuts off. Seems like the little metal plate inside the plug might be causing the issue, but the area is too small for me to look without taking apart the unit. I have an EBay warranty from a company called Square Trade. Have you heard of them? I bought the warranty because after doing some research I found out they're really good to deal with. They told me they won't replace the power adapter, but if the unit is faulty then I guess they would fix or replace it. Unfortunately there are no new Squeezebox Classic units available. Think I should try to fix this on my own? Is there something I need to solder?

I resoldered the joints inside the SB3, but the problem persisted. So yeah, it's probably the plug then.

Can the plug be fixed easily? Great device other than this minor problem.

The easiest way is probably getting a new plug, chopping off the old one, and soldering the new plug back in its place.
