Robert Palmer - The Tag ??

It's not a new undiscovered album it is a question about tagging.
Bear with me this might take a bit of explaining.
I have my music organised in what I would consider is a fairly typical manner i.e. musicshare / artist / album name except of course for compilations which are organised as musicshare / compilations / album name
In all cases (apart from ignoring "The" etc) artists are organised in alphabetical order and in the case of solo artists by First Last so Robert Palmer should appear in my menus nicely between Robert Knight (a Soul artist) and Rod Stewart. Trouble is Mr Palmer appears in the menu's under P - why ? Must be a tagging issue thinks I - checked through all of the Robert Palmer tracks I have got but no can't see anything wrong. There is one track that isn't in the "Robert Palmer" folder but is in "Compilations" - anybody got any pointers as to what might have occurred.

The most likely explanation is that somewhere you have a track with an ARTISTSORT or ALBUMARTISTSORT tag of "Palmer, Robert". If you have that on _any_ track you will get the results you are seeing for _all_ Robert Palmer tracks.

The best thing to do is look at all your tracks in a good tagging program, one that will show you all the extended tags. If you're on Windows, mp3tag is by far your best bet. Be sure to look at any albums on which RP may appear, including compilations, guest artist, etc.

Thanks aubuti that is exactly what I thought and exactly what I have done. Perhaps I missed it on the first pass. Have used mp3tag for donkeys. Although fairly new here have had a SB setup for 3-4 years. QNAP 419P 2x SB3, 1 x Boom, iPeng etc

In addition to the ARTISTSORT and ALBUMARTISTSORT tags, be on the lookout for various MusicBrainz tags, which also create havoc sometimes.

Just done a second pass - it was an ARTISTSORT on one track of one album - I must have used one of the online libraries to get the cover art (usually use Amazon) which created the tag and then I deleted them (or so I thought).
My basic tags get created by my vinyl digitizing software (Play It Again) and I just use mp3tag to add / correct and get the artwork.

Glad to hear it was something simple and not some bizarro previously-unencountered case.
