Hello,
I've been using a HP MicroServer with Suse Linux for about a year (~8000 track music library, some other hardware interfacing, backups, etc.). It's worked just great, and I'm totally happy with it. I never measured the power consumption, but it runs quite cool, much cooler than the old Dell desktop PC I used to use.

just keeping this at the top of the forum. i was looking to migrate LMS off my pc to something i could run 24/7 without burning too much power. This forum concentrates heavily on NAS and after much reading of threads and how NAS's were poor on CPU power unless you went for an expensive one ,I got drawn towards the netgear readynas ultra 2.
However, i then stumbled across the HP microserver and realised that this has a similar performance to the readynas ultra plus (netgear's top end NAS) - which is much much more expensive. the microserver also has 4 bays, 2 GB of ram and even a 250gb hard drive thrown in.
HP are running a £100 cashback deal until the end of feb, so buying this from ebuyer, along with another £20 cashback through that site, meant i picked this up for just £130!!!!!
this is just a steal so anyone thinking of getting a separate server should simply get one. period. i cant think why anyone would want a NAS over the microserver.
ive installed vortexbox on it , with 2 x 2TB seagate green drives in RAID0. this was not an easy process for me, however, but that was probably more down to my inexperience with anything other than windows, and no experience with RAID.
the performance is super fast.

What made you go for Raid 0 did you want fast disk access or a big 4tb disk? If you lose one of the disks you have lost the lot. I would maybe of just gone for 2 separate disks.

Okay - I've ordered a 40L.
I'll probably just stick win 7 on it (as I know what I'm doing!).
However, I'd like to try Vortexbox ... but activating the wifi looks a pain - any tips (newbie)?1 Touch - Muse M50 EX TPA3123 T-Amp Mini - Acoustics Q10 speakers - 2 duff ears - purfek!

you mean activating the wifi on the microserver?
i have mine plugged directly into the router via ethernet cable. Its not a good idea to have more than one wifi "hop" so the server should always be connected directly to the router (you can use homeplugs to make your electricity circuit a wired ethernet network if you cannot have your server near the router)
as long as you use a wired connection from the microserver, you shouldnt have any issues. my squeezeboxes just found the vortexbox and connected automatically
the vortexbox install is pretty straightforward. use the iso to install. I connected a usb optical drive to the microserver just for that purpose.
if you have any queries about vortexbox, use the forum
http://www.vortexbox.org/forum/
theres also a wiki with how to guides etc.
