Last.fm going to subscription only for Squeezeboxes

Got a message today from Last.fm:

From February 15 you will need to be a subscriber to listen to Last.fm Radio stations on devices, including your Logitech SqueezeNetwork player. (It will continue to be free on the website.)

    http://blog.last.fm/2011/02/07/lastf...inment-devices

They are allowing existing subscribers a 3 month free subscriptions beginning 2/15. After that it will cost $3 per month.

It was nice while it lasted.

..now if only Logitech would update the app so that it actually refleted the current Last fm offering and not things like 'my loved tracks' that was cancelled by Last fm back in November 2010....

I sometimes use it but mainly to play "my radio station" when I could not make a decision about what to listen to.

While it is only £3 a month to subscribe I won't be bothering.

I do like their selling point though, "You get a prestigious BLACK DOT on your user profile!" surely that must be worth £3 a month on its own :-)
    What am I listening to?

Boom, Receiver, iPhone iPeng & Squeezepad

Me too. But I have become hooked on the tunes on "my station" and I hate to give them up. I am currently trying Slacker which does have some of my tunes, but I hate their station announcement. Every time it comes on it makes me jump.

But $3 per month is not going to happen.

    Boooooo!

Oh, that is a real shame! I had only just discovered Last.fm and was enjoying using artist radio on my PC and just this weekend on my SqueezeBoxes.

It is going to cost us UK subscribers $4.80 (£3) not $3. It seems odd that this is the place that created Last.fm and we are the ones that get screwed over for the biggest subscription.

Not sure I can justify £3 on top of my £5 Napster subscription. At the moment I can find out new music on last.fm and then listen to the discovered artists on Napster. I will probably just start listening to genre-based radio stations instead now.

Last.fm was great as a free services, but simply does not offer enough advantages over normal radio to make it worth the subscription.

Looking quickly at the subscription details it seems that UK users are able to opt for paying $3 using Paypal - which would probably work out at around £2.

Hmmm... on-line systems like this usually stop working if you choose the wrong currency. They can locate you from your IP address.

Your location is important to streaming services as some things are available in some jurisdictions but not in others.

If it did not matter, why is there a choice?

I can't answer that - all I was pointing out is that in the terms and conditions it says:-

'The cost of the subscription shall be $3, £3 or €3 (depending on your selection)'

and that I (in the UK) was able to select $3 from the drop down menu.

I thought there was only one way to find out, so I bought a one month subscription and paid $3. Last fm is now working on my SB at a cost of £1.92

I assume you are based in the UK?

If so, well done! Should have done this myself. Might cancel my subscription and reapply at the end of the month. Might PM you closer to the time to make sure that all is still working OK.

I have to say that is pretty stupid of Last.fm if it is the case that anybody can choose to pay in dollars. It makes a complete nonsense of offering the option to pay GBP and EUR as well.
