I'm ready to take the plunge and get the goflex net to replace my nas. Just a couple more questions please:
Will iPeng run faster. At the moment it's a lot faster than the web intrface but I wouldn't say loading album tracks is instant - takes about 5 seconds. Will goflex net make iPeng run quicker?
How much disk space will I lose if squeezeplug is installed on HD, I understand partitions are created.
I watched all the videos and I think I can do the full install with no sound as I dont speak German however is there anything I should be aware of which you talk about in the video? And can I use DHCP to configure squeezeplug on the video you dont use DHCP.
Cheers. Matt

Hi Thomas,
First, about the setting of time. On first run of setup, I select TimeZone and set the correct continent and country and the terminal shows it sets the correct local time. I run the date command and it shows the correct local time. BUT, when I reboot my Dockstar squeezeplug, and then run the date command, the local time reverts to some wrong time and the date Jan 1 1970. The time zone is correct as previously set but it seems the time is no longer updated.
I assume/read there is suppose to be some cron job to get the correct time (at startup I assume), but it seems not to be happening.
My internet connection is fine, as evident when i ran TimeZone it worked, but the time is lost and not updated when i reboot.

squeezeplug_to_hd
I increased the size of the PUTTY window and I was able to run the INSTALL option on the script. Thanks for that advice.
The script looked to be doing the right things and took the right sort of time. At the end of the script, I powered down, unplugged the SD and then restarted the system. The system popped back up as a pogoplug rather than a squeezeplug. I tried plugging the HDD into each of the three USB slots and
rebooted with the same result. The rootfs partition on the HDD is definitely marked as bootable.
I rebooted with the HDD in its original slot and the SD in place. It still comes up as a pogoplug. I then booted with the HDD unplugged and the SD in place and it booted as a squeezeplug. After booting I replugged the HDD and looked at etc/fstab on both devices.
ON THE SD:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.

HDD

/dev/sdb2: UUID="4b3c593d-3e7b-4606-ba51-21c0c27840b8" TYPE="swap"
Both FSTABs seem to want to mount the SD rather than the HDD as root. I tried manually editing the UUIDs to address the HDD but got the same behaviour.
I was surprised to see that the contents of the SqueezePlugLibrary partition on the HDD appears to be unchanged and is still NTFS. The three HDD partitions are now:
7.81GB from 1 to 1020 Linux
3.91GB from 1021 to 1530 Linux swap
919.78GB from 1531 to 121600 NTFS
I think the partition sizes are unchanged from my earlier manual partitioning.
QUESTION: Any ideas?
I have the feeling that the library partition still being NTFS is a clue. If you don't have a better idea I'm going to manually re-partition the HDD as a single ext2 partition and then try again.

Hi,
the cronjob looks like that:
# m h dom mon dow command
1 * * * * rdate ptbtime1.ptb.de > /dev/null
So the time will be set at the first minute every hour. So normally the Time at boot starts at something like 0:00. So if the plug gets an IP-connection the first minute after booting everything should work correctly.
Please check you cronjob with: crontab -l
Greetings,
Thomas

Hi Thomas,
Thanks for your response. So, does this mean that my router is failing to provide an internet connection within the first minute of the plug's bootstart? Would the solution be to progressively increase the minute field of the cron job, from 1 to 2 to 3 and so on until the time can be set correctly on its own at bootstart?
BTW, where are the crontab file(s) that squeezeplug use located?
Leon

squeezeplug_to_hdd on a Dockstar
Further to my last two posts on this topic. I am trying to install SBS to a HDD on a Dockstar. I refered to the flash drive as a SD because it is a class 10 SDHC in a USB adaptor. The only USB drive I had (an Integral Courier) is too slow to boot. To avoid confusion, I will refer to it as a USB drive in future.
I partly understand why I cannot get to a bootable HDD. Going round the Dockstar from the side USB port, I have the bootable USB drive with Squeezeplug image on it, an audio stick, a 1TB Western Digital Elements HDD, and finally the Ethernet. The USB drive is /dev/sda. The HDD is /dev/sdc. I have tried swapping the devices between physical USB ports and rebooting but the devices remain firmly fixed on those assignments. The squeezeplug_to_hd.sh script expects a HDD on /dev/sdb, so it is doomed to fail.
I have used the script as a guide and manually performed the partitioning, and then executed the following adapted from the original script for my disc assignment:
- mkfs.ext2 /dev/sdc1
- tune2fs -L "rootfs" /dev/sdc1
- mkswap /dev/sdc2
- mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdc3
- mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt
- cd /mnt
- wget http://squeezeplug.de/wp-content/upl..._ds_355.tar.gz
- tar -xzvf rootfs_ds_355.tar.gz
- halt
It all looks very promising and seems to be doing useful stuff. I did not see any obvious error messages. When it finished, I waited for a minute, then uplugged the USB drive but it still boots as a pogoplug!
Previously, I had the USB drive working with a different HDD that held a copy of the music library and I thought there may be 'memory' of that device so I restored the original downloaded USB image to the USB drive, updated and patched SBS until I got the squeezebox to HD option in setup. I never assigned a music library. I plugged in the HDD but it was still /dev/sdc.
These are the partitions on the USB and HDD.
USB:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 763 3076384+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda2 764 829 266112 82 Linux swap / Solaris
HDD:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdc1 * 1 1306 10490413+ 83 Linux
/dev/sdc2 1307 1372 530145 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sdc3 1373 121600 965731410 83 Linux
QUESTION 1: Is it possible to force the HDD assignment as /dev/sdb?
QUESTION 2: Why does it keep appearing as /dev/sdc and not /dev/sdb as the script expects?
QUESTION 3: Is there any obvious reason why my manual version of the script would not work?Last edited by GreyBeard; 2011-07-22 at 07:13. Reason: correct url

Some things to try:
sda or os boot drive should be in back usb port furthest from ethernet port. OK
When you do the SK to HD install, start the dockstar with just the usb os on the port I just said above.
Then after the device is going, then add the HD to side usb port. DO NOT ADD audio tongle to do SK to HD install. Then you should be able to do install. Then reverse order to do the backup/restore ...so OS boot drive is always in the back port away from the ethernet port. Also, if you now have both usb os thumb drive and hard drive with OS on it, make sure you only have 1 usb port used on restart, just to make sure it's using the right device also it could confuse the bootloader since it could see 2 devices with os on it, right? Thomas's install instructions explain when to add 2nd drive. I'm just spelling it out , for trouble-shooting purposes.
Usually if the install didn't go right, it will default to pogo software. So take the working usb os and do the SK to HD install again.
Also, make sure you turn off the dockstar the right way or you will also corrupt the drive. "shutdown -h now" then wait 60 seconds before pulling the plug giving the dockstar enough time to end all the programs.
Now some Hard drives might not work with dockstar. My usb powered hard drive's do not work because they take too long to start up. My USB hard drives that are self powered work, because they are already ON before I turn on the dockstar.
I'm not sure why you added the audio tongle when you were doing the SF to HD in the first place, since if all the dockstar had just 2 ports used, all you could get would be sdb, but since you added 3 things, your chances that sdc would show up are greater, right?
But the order of where to put the os boot is important, and if you have 2 hard drives on unit, you want to make sure SDA is started first, therefore, we use the back port furthest from the etherport first. I'm thinking the second port is side one.
Hope that helps.Last edited by richman; 2011-07-22 at 10:45.
