Long folder/file names because of international characters

Hello,

I was trying to get some help in Linux section with no luck.

I have my media library on a Windows share. I mount that share as a folder on Ubuntu 10.10 where I have SS running. After I set that folder as music folder location and perform a scan, some of the songs are not added to DB. Those songs have international (Russian) characters in their file names and tags, and sub-folders where they are saved. Another copy of SS that runs on Win XP and has the same share mapped as a drive finds those songs, so the problem is not with tagging or file names.

After further investigation I noticed that SS on Ubuntu displays those files by replacing international characters with their codes, thus severely extending the full file path/name.

This fact gave me an idea that files are not indexed because path is too deep. I shared a subfolder on my music library to make path shorter and set it as a music folder location in SS. SS indexed all the songs successfully.

Here comes the question:
What can I do to keep existing folder layout of my music library and avoid running into path length limitations? Or how to make Ubuntu not to replace international characters with their codes?

Nautilus in Ubuntu shows filenames properly. SS version 7.5.3

How does the file names look via the terminal in ubuntu .

Nautilus ca be to smart sometimes.

What is the locale or language of the windows machine that hosts the files.

What is the local of ubuntu machine. (just type locale in a termoinal window and hit enter)

When mounting the share via fstab what have set these parameters to

iocharset and codepage

Example:

iocharset=utf8,codepage=unicode

I don't know all iocharset options but there is a bunch off them.

Folder and file names in terminal look just fine.

Linux locale is en_US.utf8. fstab mounts Windows share with iocharset=utf8 option; there is no codepade option specified.

Windows box that hosts the share is set to "English (United States)".

The scanner.log file, however, lists the files as this:

A /var/lib/squeezeboxserver/prefs/tracks_persistent.json file, on the other hand, lists file names as this:

I think that there is a good chance of that setup not working with 7.5. It would be very interesting to hear if it works with 7.6
