I tried compiling Squeezeplay for my headless Ubuntu 10.4 (64-bit, AMD) server. When I started the program, I got this message:
Squeezeplay 7.5.1 r9214M
[0;33m20101107 00:53:07.442 INFO squeezeplay - JiveMain.lua:265 SqueezePlay version 7.5.1 r9214M[0m
[0;31m20101107 00:53:07.444 ERROR squeezeplay.ui.draw - jiveL_initSDL:168 SDL_Init(V|T|A): Unsupported console hardware

I'd appreciate any help you can give me.

Squeezeplay headless on Ubuntu?

Here's a simple way to debug - try putting a monitor on your box and see if SP will start up. I know I had issues trying to run headless on a Mac Mini with Ubuntu, so I just hooked a junk monitor to it that stays powered off all the time.
Not really a solution, but it works...Server: Ubuntu 8.04 Server on Intel 1.66GHz Core Duo Mac Mini, 1GB RAM, 72GB internal for OS, 750GB Maxtor One Touch Firewire for media. SC 7.3.1~24372
Main Audio: SB Touch > Rega DAC > Audio Research LS2B mkII > Audio Research VT100 mkII > Maggie 1.7 & Rythmik F12
Work Audio: SB Receiver > Jolida SJ801 > NHT Super Zero's

Um...not to discourage you, but what's the point of squeeze play on a headless server? Why not use squeezeslave instead? In my very limited experience, squeezeslave is a whole lot easier to build than squeeze play.

I've tried using Squeezeslave, but it generally works only for the first few songs. After that, the display shows that songs are playing but there's no sound. I've compiled it on my own machine (AMD 64-bit, Ubuntu 10.4 Server), and still have the problem. I see that Squeezeslave 1.0 has been released--I'll give that a try.

I had a similiar issue with an Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02) onboard sound card using the snd-hda-intel alsa drivers.
Turned out to be a bug in the alsa driver v1.0.23 using that card.
I plugged in a usb sound card and squeezeslave works perfectly using it.Ralphy

Squeezeslave donations always appreciated.

Oh man. I had to register just to say thanks. I only wish I would have found this post a few hours ago. Just about drove me batty. I had an old laptop I was going to setup and couldn't get squeezeslave to play anything for the life of me.

Using squeezeplay on arm device without screen
Hi,
I used squeezeslave on an arm device without screen, but I met trouble : squeezeslave hangs sometimes and squeezeslave plays only 44,1 Khz music.
So I manage to run squeezeplay on this device. I install xvfb which is a "dummy" X-server and compile squeezeplay for arm.
I use a packaging of squeezeplay for archlinux, see this link https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=56769
I can upload the binary package for arm device, if someone need it.
Hope this help.
